transporting guitar

My daughter is a commuter student and has to brig her guitar to class each week. We are in Nj and I'm concerned about her leaving it in the car until her class. I'm afraid the temperature change will ruin the guitar. Am I right to be concerned? What should she do?

I can’t speak specifically about guitars (a solid body guitar will also be different than an acoustic one),but with any string instrument there can be concerns about changes in temperature and humidity. I would be especially concerned in warmer months, when the interior of a car can heat up (and if you live in places like Arizona, where the inside can get to 130 degrees or more, especially). I would be less worried in cool weather or even cold weather with the instrument cooling down then excess heat in a closed car.

To be honest, I would tell her not to leave it in the car if at all possible, but especially not in warm or hot weather with sun…one thought, does the school have any kind of lockers in the music area (if they have one), or could she talk to the school about maybe some place where it can be stored? On top of everything else, having the guitar in the car also could tempt someone to break in, though guitars are not particularly that attractive, as opposed to cell phones or such…

And one thing, never, ever put it in the trunk! better to be inside, maybe covered by something, then in there, trunks are a disaster area.

I concur with MusicPrnt. Is there an office in the school that would allow her to stash the guitar while she’s in other classes? Or are their lockers available? It does sound like quite an albatross to drag around all day.

The music department should have instrument lockers.
