The college D will attend next year has stated that they will give her $ for travel allowance, and that amount will be adjusted according to how much they feel she will actually need. My question, how many trips home do they generally include in this amount? I'm assuming winter break, but unsure of other times. Do they also take into account the student getting to the college initially in the fall and then home in the summer? TIA

Basically travel covers getting to school in the fall, winter break (christmas), possibly spring break (not every student comes home for spring break because some schools offer alternative spring break where students do some sort of community involvement work) , and the end of the year. Thanksgiving is usually not covered because it is so close to the end of the term and for many families it could be quite expensive to make 2 back to back trips.

Your D has an expected student contribution (which should come from summer earnings) How is the travel paid? Part of this money is also taken into consideration for her travel expenses as far as getting her to school in the fall. D is also expected to budget her $$ from her work study to offset the cost of her ticket.

The one thing your D will have to do is remain cognizant of her travel time tables, book in advance and find discounts so that her travel will be as affordable as possible. In our house D pays for her own travel after booking to many tickets at the last minute and paying close to $300 for a flight that she could get $50 each way if she were to book 15 days in advance. Guess what? Now that she books her own tickets there have not been any more $300 fares, and she manages her $$.

There's such thing as a $50 plane ticket nowadays?

depending on where you are flying to and from yes, especially when D is flying from one major hub to another. Right now she can book a spring break flight home for $50
