Travel insurance covering COVID quarantine expenses?

I am traveling to Germany and I am having trouble finding travel insurance which covers expenses incurred if one tests positive for COVID.

Such expenses would include: the cost of a hotel room until one again tests negative, food, the difference in airfare due to the delay in returning to the USA, etc.

Can anyone recommend travel insurance that covers this?

Wouldnā€™t that be covered under trip interruption?

It looks to me like ā€œtrip interruptionā€ pays for the portion of the trip that was interrupted.

So, if you paid $5,000 for a 10-day tour and had to leave after the first day for a death in the family, you would be reimbursed for the remainder of the tour ($4,500).

Ah, maybe. I donā€™t know the answer. I always use Squaremouth, which is an aggregator of a lot of ins companies. Call them, they have been pretty helpful in the past. Their filters are good too. I would think that a more expensive policy would cover this.

Have to read carefully but this is what Allianz says

What travel guard says. When I looked, you would have to purchase their upgraded travel insurance.

These policies seem directed at trips canceled due to COVID or medical expenses associated with COVID.

Still looking for a policy specific to covering expenses if you have tested positive and incur costs with quarantining until you have a negative test result.

You need ā€˜trip extensionā€™ coverage, which is different than trip interruption. Iā€™ve mentioned these guys several timesā€¦tripinsurancestore.com. Donā€™t let the web page scare you (a bit like a cheap magazine cover).

Iā€™ve booked a river cruise trip for the fall. Purchased everything through Viking and purchased the trip insurance. Iā€™ve been reading Facebook groups and unfortunately there have been quite a few posts from cruisers who have tested positive for covid and were quarantined. They are reporting that their covid quarantine, flight delays and cruise are being covered.

Vikingā€™s insurance is through Trip Mate.

I guess Iā€™m confused as to what you are looking for.

Iā€™m copying what travel guard says in their FAQ. I thought that was what you are looking for

  • Trip Interruption can provide coverage for the unused portion of your prepaid and non-refundable expenses, as well as additional transportation expenses incurred to return home or rejoin your trip.
  • Trip Delay can provide coverage for additional expenses you may incur for hotel, meals and certain transportation costs incurred if you are required by a physician to quarantine.
  • Medical Expense and Emergency Medical Evacuation can provide coverage for medical expenses incurred while being treated for COVID-19.

Go to Squaremouth. You can easily compare all the policies and select the one you like. They clearly specify whether or not they cover quarantine.I purchased one through them, Tin Leg insurance, and it covers Covid quarantine under trip delay. This isnā€™t a mystery, just go to the website, put in your data and choose the policy that covers what is important to you.

We are going on a silverseas cruise. Their insurance covers all Covid related trip interruptions and quarantine costs. My Amex trip insurance (free) covers other trip cancellations due to illness. I donā€™t think I will need additional insurance.
A lot of cruises and hotels are offering additional Covid coverage and you may have trip insurance through your credit card as part of card benefits. I would check them out before paying for additional insurance.

We purchased a policy like this through AmX (though ended up cancelling as it wasnā€™t what I was looking for).

This was recommended to me on one of the travel sites. I am traveling in a couple of weeks so have the same worry. I am still reading up on this. SafetyWing - Insurance for Nomads, by Nomads

I am not eligible for Tin Leg policies, perhaps because of my age (62)?

Too bad, because as described, that is exactly the coverage Iā€™m looking for.

Also explains why I didnā€™t find that coverage when I did my original search.

Very helpful info

Thatā€™s a bummer, I didnā€™t know Tin Leg discriminated because of age. Or it might be the country you input? But when I went to Squaremouth, there were plenty of policies that fit the same bill, I just chose Tin Leg because it was a little bit cheape.

It looks like I will buy a policy from Heymondo.

Does anyone have experience with them?
