Travel - Portugal and/or Morocco

So - headed to Israel this Summer for a wedding.

Looking at visiting Portugal or Morocco.

Has anyone been to both or perhaps one or the other? The airline offers a free multi day layover (in Portugal), so it’s easy to do. While Morocco doesn’t have the same, it seems interesting.

Anyone with experience - it’d be just three days - I guess since we don’t normally travel overseas, not sure what we want - but to see different things that we normally wouldn’t.

What did you do there? What did you enjoy? Any tips - like hiring a guide or must-see things.

Thanks

Been to both; would go back to Portugal in a heartbeat. Morocco is interesting and we could have planned it better (hopped over somewhat on a whim while in Spain) but I don’t have the same desire to go back.

Thanks. Did you go to Lisbon, Porto or more? Looks like we’ll have maybe 3 nights.

Thanks

I was in Lisbon and did day trips plus a few days in the south. Lisbon is great.

Great - thanks!!

It’s been almost 20 years, but Portugal remains a favorite among the places I’ve visited. The geography/climate/cultural centers are not unlike California! Warm beaches to the south, wine country to the north. We road-tripped throughout the country and I think the Douro Valley was my favorite section of the trip. Be sure to check out the Pousadas de Portugal for accommodations. Many historic sites were turned into very interesting hotels, formerly state-run:

I visited Lisbon last October for 4 days after a cruise. I very much enjoyed my stay. I did a wine and food walking tour, a tuk tuk old town tour, a day trip out of the city. I though food was great and was very safe to walk around. I would go back again.

My family and I did this 3-4 years ago when we went. I second your idea! Super great and friendly people. My younger D (the HS Sr) did not like as much as baccalau dominated the menu and she does not care for it.

I’ve been to both, and while I prefer Morocco, with only 3 days I also vote to stick to Portugal.

I’ve been to both places. I find Morocco fascinating, spice markets, leather factory, souks. Love their food, especially those cooked in tagines. However, if you only have 3 days, I agree Portugal is easier as there are way too many sights to see in Morocco.

Sounds nasty. Hope they have other things. I think they have piri piri chicken. Or I’ll lose weight :). Thx for feedback.

If you don’t like fish it would be somewhat challenging to eat in Lisbon.
I liked it but can understand those who don’t.

Yes, and beware of those little whole fish they serve, way too many small bones and too much work!

We were just in Lisbon for 10 days in December. Didn’t eat baccalau once.

We loved Lisbon, with only 3 days though, I would commit to Porto or the Algarve.

Have fun!

I don’t think it’s challenging at all to eat fishless in Lisbon. There are a number of absolutely fantastic Italian restaurants, just like everywhere else in Europe.

Don’t get me wrong. I love fish and ate a lot of it while we were there. I just don’t like salty fish frisbees. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

That sounds disgusting! Don’t think I ever ate nor was offered salty fish frisbees the entire 11 days I was in Portugal. Didn’t eat much fish, either.
