specifically, a 1-BR/studio apartment.

thanks.

Well, yea it’s doable. By why not start looking now? Maybe you won’t be able to personally check places out, but you could start checking out craigslist and send out emails/calls.

the thing is, i won’t be able to go to berkeley to check out places until august.

if i start sending out emails/calls now about potential places, won’t they be taken by the time i can actually go up there and look at them?

on a related note, how smart or dumb is it to rent a place without checking it out first? (if it’s from a real-estate company rather than from Craigslist)

Well, I would always want to check the place out, especially since there are some pretty shady landlords (and companies!) in Berkeley. Not necessary though, but most renters want to meet the applicant before they hand over the keys.

It’s getting more competitive as it gets closer to school. Trust me. I’ve been looking for an apartment for Aug 1st since the beginning of July. Everywhere I’ve been, there were like 6 other people who applied each time. You shouldn’t email people now if you’re not going to be here for awhile. Those places won’t be held for you exclusively. Also, you should never rent a place without checking it out. I don’t know any landlords who would do that. Plus, you need to check out the place before.

Good luck apartment hunting! I’ve been through 2 weeks of stress. Thank god I got accepted for this perfect place on Northside yesterday.

costs will be higher though… if thats not a problem for you…

you know price inelasticity/elasticity/econ, etc

Don’t do raja.
How much do one bed room studios cost nowadays?

1BDR goes for around $1100-1400. Studios go for $800-1200. It all depends on the location, size, etc.

And it’s not just Raj. Be wary of Everest too. They are so awful there.

What’s difference between one bed and studios?

Studios are only 3 rooms - a living room, a kitchen, and a bathroom. People put their beds in the ‘living room’. I’ve got a studio for $1100 right across the street from campus (granadabuilding.com), just to give you a range of how expensive they’ll be the closer you get.

What’s wrong w/ Raj & Everest? I’ve started looking into future apartments for next year already LOL XD.

Within what interval of dates will you be staying?

Ohh. hmm I see. Are studios only meant for one person?

They’re ‘meant’ for one person, but if it’s big enough, and you don’t mind the close proximity, you can probably squeeze more people in. It’ll be like having a dorm room + kitchen/personal bathroom.

The guy who runs Everest is a convicted sex trafficker. He was caught because one of the girls died in a building he owned. (from what I’ve read)

I’m sharing a studio with a friend that is on durant near the asian ghetto. It’s a prime location. We’re paying 1195/month w/o utilities, and the living room is about 15x12 So it’s a bit pricey for a studio; we’re definitely paying for the location.

Eek. I just looked up articles about it. I don’t know why anyone would still want to live there!
