Well, first of all I'd be an out of state student (from California)and I'm a Junior in HS right now. I'm just curious because the topics that I noticed that've been posted here for chances, all of them have AP classes. Let's say I'm a pretty average student aka I don't take any AP classes. I have A's and B's in all my subjects and a C in math (because, math is my weak point) and that's basically it. I'm not in any sports, but I'm thinking of trying out for tennis(does being in sports like help in any way)? Also, if this matters I'm in Avid. I'm also really good in English and I'm thinking of taking AP English as a senior (I want to major in English teaching at UW). So do I have a chance? I'm also in Geometry, so when I'm a senior I'll be in Algebra 2.

Hello! I’m also an out of state aspiring to get to UW
** So if anybody could give us more advice, that’d be GREAT **
Here’s the little bit of advice I could do.

First things first, why not AP classes?
You don’t have to do 50million of them, but maybe one or two this Junior year? AP classes aren’t as hard as people make them out to be usually. You’ll go through peaks of work-heavy, but for the most part its just like the other classes.
Since you’re strong in English, don’t wait until Senior year to take it AP. DO IT THIS YEAR! =D 1) You’ll get help in SAT/ACT preperation, and 2) If you pass the AP test (4 or 5) you’ll get college credits for it! e.g. you can progress through your English major faster.

As for sports, you should deffinantly try for Tennis. Try to do as many EC’s as you can these next two years. If you go to a big HS, you can probably find some little clubs to join that won’t eat up too much of your time. If you go to a very small HS, you might have to reach out more into the community for EC’s.
Also: Do community service!
Its [usually] fun, and looks great!
One hour a week on weekends isn’t much time, but it adds up!

Even if you’re graduating, and you’re a little behind in math, you have the SAT and ACT to help. Get a study book, or somebody to help you and it will be a breeze! SAT isn’t bad after you’ve practiced it.
As for ACT… I have never practiced the ACT, but its probably the same?

=) Good luck! I hope somebody else can offer advice.

I’d say, making sure you have solid test scores. Check collegeboard.com for the range of average UW acceptees, and aim there or higher.

As of now I would say you have a pretty slim chance. EC’s are gaining increasing importance in the resume, and it dosent seem that you have that many; definitly do tennis if nothing else. In addition as posted above APs arent that bad. I was in two this year and had some realy hard times and some times where we watched movies for a week, it really varries. Its good that writing it your strong point because the essay is important as well. But ya cram in as many EC’s and AP’s as you can before you send in apps. Also study hard for ACT/SAT
