Trying to major in bio & comp sci. Please recommend some colleges?

@collegebound752‌ You think I’d have a chance of getting in? I read a little about it and heard some good stuff, so if I do have a chance, I’ll apply.

bump

I’m surprised your high school guidance counselor would recommend stats over precalculus. I’d talk to them about this, particularly if you want to go into computer science. The CS degree programs we have looked into for son generally start with calculus 1 although some do mention a catchup mechanism for students who haven’t been through precalc yet.

I don’t have any specific school suggestions but can share what my other son is doing–he is interested in physics so for potential schools he is poking around on the physics dept websites to see what kind of research programs are conducted, what kinds of opportunities are mentioned for undergrads and how research groups are described. Also, he looks into required classes for degrees as well as minors offered. It is really time consumng though but has given him some input for preferences.

Good luck in your search.

@MidwestSalmon‌ thanks!

I’ve forgotten to tell you guys this but I also may add Pepperdine and Chapman into my list of colleges I might apply to, but I’m in the process of looking up the strength in their natural sciences departments. Also, out of mostly just curiosity, what are colleges that have ACT scores between mine and 32 and also have a 20-50% acceptance rate?

OP, for an answer to your last question, start here:

Bumping again.

Update: I recently took the SAT just for the heck of it and i turns out I did a little bit better than I did on the ACT
MATH - 540
CR - 670
WRITING - 700
What are the best schools that I can get into (even by the skin of my teeth) with these newly updated stats?

Great scores and Computer Science/Biology is a great field to look into. Our students and students throughout the country are doing great things with those majors. Good luck!

Thank you, I’ll probably really need it! With my scores being this high at the moment, I’m considering applying to all the colleges on the list as an English/Environmental Science major. What would be my chances for some of the more prestigious schools on the list?

Did you post before under a different handle where you wanted bio and the parents wanted CS?

Those reach colleges are too reachy for a 3.0, the ones mentioned as so in the first post or two. Your CR score is very good, the math score is only mediocre, the writing score is not used a lot of places. I don’t see that it changes too much for you. You need to focus on colleges for B students, not A students. And don’t be prestige obsessed or you lose sight of the important things. Solid college where you fit in and will be happy and can afford.

I didn’t read through all so what is the budget?

You did apply for your instate UC and CSU right? Did you get your application into Howard? If not do it ASAP because you will be eligible for a full tuition & fees scholarship (I don’t think one of the higher scholarships) but it is first come, first served.

Your Math + CR score is a 1210. While those are very nice scores, they probably aren’t high enough for prestigious schools. I know that you’re an AA student, and that can be a hook, but I think you still need higher scores and a higher GPA for top schools.

Most schools don’t care about the writing score.

Re: Howard Univ

Most doctors did not go to Howard. Where did you get that idea from?

I’ve heard it said of HU that it produces more black PhDs, doctors, and other professionals than any other American institution.

Still applying to Howard. Also, what’re some colleges where my SAT score is in the 30-50th percentile? Just wondering.

Put Howard app in without delay, before searching for more, remember 1st come and you are behind.

Try playing with supermatch

There are hundreds of colleges where your Math score and CR score are in the 30-50% range. You’d have to look them up one-by-one, I believe, at a website like college data dot com. After doing the Math score, you can do the CR score.

Or you could get a rougher idea, one that doesn’t segregate the CR+M+W the way college admissions will do, by going to college simply dot com.
