Trying to transfer out of UNC - backup housing ideas?

I’m a freshman at UNC right now, and my dorm experience has been awful. I quickly decided I never want to live in dorms (or with strangers in general) again. It’s simply not a good fit for me. So, I didn’t fill out the housing application for next year, and I planned on finding a small apartment in CH or Carrboro by myself.

A little while after I decided that, however, I realized I wanted to try reapplying to my number one school that I was deferred and rejected from last year, just to see what happens. I could genuinely see my chances going either way, so I’m not in a position to bet I’m definitely going to get in or definitely going to be stuck in Chapel Hill again. I won’t find out for sure until June.

My question is: what in the world am I supposed to do about housing for next year if I have to stay at UNC? If I go ahead and find an apartment in Chapel Hill but I end up getting into my other school, it doesn’t seem feasable to get out of a lease. On the other hand, if I make no definitive plans here and get rejected, it sounds like there will be no apartments left anywhere near here by June.

The only solutions I’ve heard so far have involved searching places like Craigslist for people whose roommates backed out at the last minute. However, that seems like a really unreliable backup, and it completely overrides the whole “not wanting to live with strangers” aspect that turned me away from dorms in the first place.

Does anyone have any other ideas for backup or last minute housing plans?

Most leases let you get out with some notice.

Perhaps you could wait until June and still be able to get a 1 br apartment. Most of the apartments that are super close to campus are already gone but you should be able to find something within a few miles of campus. Another option to consider is to take a look at the Facebook UNC Chapel Hill Subleases, Roommates page. Having a roommate in an apartment where you have your own bedroom is much different than having a roommate in a tiny dorm room so it may work out better than your freshman experience. Good luck to you
