Tufts or Wesleyan?

I have been accepted to both and really don’t know which to choose. If anyone has any suggestions/ experience at either of these schools please put them down below!

I really like the size of Wesleyan and closeness of the faculty with the students. At the same time, I loved Tufts’ campus and its location is also a plus. I am slightly worried about having bigger class sizes, and whether the fact that being so close to Boston affects the Tufts campus life. Any advice?

Tufts has 4% fewer classes under 20 (68 vs 72) and 4% more classes over 50 (7 vs, 3). They will tend to be intro classes in Economics, CS, Psychology and some Engineering. I believe that Intro to Economics and Gospel Choir (fun because it is big) are the two biggest classes. My daughter got plenty of attention in Psych. (she did not take the other courses) Profs by and large are very friendly, and there is a “take a student to lunch” program called Spirit.

Somerville/Davis Square, Cambridge/Harvard Square and Boston are a huge win for entertainment, internships, recruiting, speakers and bringing in teachers for the Experimental College classes. What are your concerns?

Once upon a time, the biggest knock against the Tufts social scene was that Boston was actually too much of a draw on weekends and tended to lessen attendance at homegrown events. But, that should be less of a “problem” now that the trains shut down at12:30 a.m…

I read “Intro, Economics of Gospel Choir” as a single class. I was like, wow, Tufts really is innovative  Had to take another look!

OP you have two excellent options, you can’t go wrong.

Have you gone to accepted students’ days? Are there any significant differences in financial aid?

Congratulations and please do come back and let us know what you decide.

@mominco - That would make a great course for the Experimental College!

But it would probably not be as much fun as the actual Gospel Choir course…

A few selected members were invited to perform for president Obama .

The place to find lots of innovative courses at Tufts is the Experimental College (taught by students and professionals in the Boston area). This semester they offer a course “How to Sell Drugs:The Economics of Big Pharma”, but no course on “The Economics of Gospel Choir”…

@circuitrider - Boston has never been a “city that never sleeps”.

This can be an issue for some people who are used to NYC, LA and Miami.

The T shuts down at 12:30- 1:00, establishments are closed by 2AM and the streets are pretty empty by 3AM.

The fact that the T shuts down before some of the establishments makes no sense, but that has been a quirk of Boston for decades. The exception was a recent one year trial of a “late night T service” where the T ran until 3AM. It lost money, so it was not extended beyond the trial period.

Students were pretty much in the habit of using Uber, so it hasn’t appeared to affect them that much. What is interesting is that I don’t think my daughter ever switched from Uber to the late night service. If her behavior was typical, then that could help explain the failure of the trial…
