Tufts’ President Apologizes for Harassment of Smith Volleyball Players

"Last Wednesday, Tufts University President Anthony Monaco traveled to Smith to apologize in person for the harassment of Smith volleyball players by some Tufts students. Monaco was joined by Bill Gehling, director of athletics at the university.

The apology came following an investigation into accusations of harassment in September. The Tufts students investigated, all members of the men’s lacrosse team, were confirmed to have used sexist and racist remarks at a Smith-Tufts volleyball game on Sept. 21. The students were reported by a fellow Tufts student for allegedly calling players by name and threatening them. Following the accusation, the university launched both an internal and an external investigation, the latter from an attorney hired by the Office of Equal Opportunity." ...

Nice personal gesture.

Good move by Monaco.
Needless to say, though, I am extremely disappointed to hear about the Tufts’ students behavior. This is the first I’ve heard of it. Does anyone know the particulars regarding what was said?

Whatever happened at the end of Dartmouth investigation?

When I read this article I didn’t think “oh those Tufts students”

Instead it was “there’s another male LAX culture problem . . .”

I am not sure how to post links but this story has been picked up by the Boston Globe and other major news channels - I think you can search it on Boston.com. The original editorial that started the investigation appears in the Tufts Daily, as does the letter with the response after the investigation.

I will not repeat the comments, they are in all the stories. I know girls who were at and in the game and were appalled and embarrassed by the behavior of the boys yelling insults. It is good to see Tufts react officially to behavior that usually gets written off as boys will be boys, or excused because they were drunk. Excusing the behavior creates the sexual bullying and entitlement culture that has led to many much more serious problems at other universities. Just read what has been going on at Amherst, or what happened with the BU hockey players last year.

I was really pleased to see Tufts take the high road.
