Tuition Exchange 2018

@SLUProf
Your github chart is great! I noticed the Marist was not listed. Is that intentional or are they just new to TE? Thanks!

We are still waiting on one believe it or not. So as a recap S19, 3.7UW, 4.2W, 34 ACT, not an athlete, not a URM, dual citizen, Eagle Scout, looking to study civil engineering. Has several college courses (not dually enrolled) from the community college where I work. His TE schools included:

Bucknell - he was wait listed there, so no TE
Clarkson - accepted, received TE plus the extra $10k op top of the set rate, first merit (can’t remember amount) was replaced with TE
George Washington - accepted with $20k merit, no TE
Lafayette - he was wait listed
University of New Haven - accepted, received TE, merit of $27k replaced with TE
Norwich - accepted, received TE
Quinnipiac - accepted, received TE, received $24.5k merit but was replaced with TE
Villanova - accepted, they are not giving freshman any TE this year as they have sophomores waiting
Wentworth - still waiting on TE, got highest merit available but would be replaced if receives TE

He also applied to a couple of UMass campuses (Amherst not a good fit) and received a LOT of merit based on his scores. Now the dilemma…

@wallyworldjb yes, Marist is listed as new on the TE site.

Those sound like some great options, @MAandMEmom. You cast a wide net, which is our plan too after hearing about so many great students waitlisted or not receiving TE.

We hadn’t considered Delaware but will take a look. Thanks for the suggestion.

I am so impressed with how all of you are navigating this during what is already a busy time of year for academics. Best of luck and thank you again for keeping this thread updated for those who have younger students.

So we just heard that S19 did get the last one at Wentworth, which is likely the best fit for him! I continue to believe that targeting schools where your child meets or exceeds 75% stats is key for success. It becomes even more challenging when you don’t know those stats for specific competitive programs or if the school uses the TE awards to attract certain populations.

@MAandMEmom Congrats to S19 and family! I am engineering career director at one of S19’s application schools and my S20 not only has a remarkably simiar profile to your S19, but a similar liat of target schools. Visited Villanova yesterday, Lafayette this morning and Bucknell right this moment! Love this thread and all the thoughtful commentors!

Hi everyone. As a parent of twins, I have been anticipating our Tuition Exchange benefits since our kids were born almost 18 years ago. There is scant info on TE, and this board has some of the best crowdsourced info. So I’m going to provide as much as info possible to help others in the future. Here have been our timeframes and notifications for our two D19 and S19, with identical scores–35 ACT and 4.0 GPA. Of course, each exporting school’s internal deadlines and policies are unique to that school.

EXPORTING SCHOOL NOTICE:

Late August 2018: Email from HR notifying us of applications open for eligible employees to apply tor TE benefit, with Oct. 1st deadline.

November 2, 2018: Email from HR notifying us that no lottery is required and directing us to the TE Easy App to identify up to 10 schools at which we wish to pursue TE.

IDENTIFICATION OF TE SCHOOLS

November 6, 2018: Listed 8 schools for each kid through TE Easy App.

APPLICATION TO TE SCHOOLS

 Applied to 3 out of 8 listed schools for D19 (Fordham, Mt. Holyoke & USC);

Awarded TE from Mt. Holyoke on 3/21/19 ($37,000, no stacking merit)

Awarded TE from Fordham on 4/5/19 ($37,000)

Awarded TE from USC on 4/9/19 (80% or $45,804,stacks merit up to full tuition + $8000, covers study abroad)

RESULTS for S19 (plus any notes)

Awarded TE from Pitt on 1/29/19 ($32,470, replaced merit, reported avgs: 1480 SAT or 33 ACT, top 5%)

Denied TE from Bard on 3/11/19

Awarded TE from Boston University on 3/23/19 ($37,000, no merit awarded).

Denied TE from American University on 3/25/19 (14% acceptance rate reported for TE this year).

Awarded TE from USC on 4/9/19 (80% tuition or $45,804 first year, stacked with merit to full tuition+, covers study abroad).

Awarded TE from GWU on 4/10/19 ($39,800, no stacking merit, so TE replaced $25,000 merit)

Hope this helps someone!

@wallyworldjb I’m so glad someone found that chart useful! I spent a lot of time on it, because the information I wanted didn’t seem to be in one place. I guess Marist is new. If you have their information, then I would be glad to add it to the list! For others, as a reminder, I made a table with tons of info about as many of the TE schools as I could find. It is here: https://github.com/speegled/tuition_exchange/blob/master/data/final_data.csv

@SLUProf - thanks for this chart! Very helpful!

My D is a hs sophomore (soon to be junior-ack!). This whole thread makes my head spin. How do you all know when/how to do all the TE requirements? She and I have talked to her high school counselor and she’s never dealt with TE before so she couldn’t help us understand. The TE officer where my H works said not to worry (and basically leave her alone) until next Sept. when interested parties see if they make the seniority cut. Meanwhile, D’s schedule during the schoolyear is crazy so we were planning on a few road trips this summer. She’s not sure what she wants to study so I’m trying to find schools that have the majority of them. I’ve been getting the schools from the TE list. She’s a good student–on an academic scholarship to attend her hs; is in the Advanced program so all her classes are either AP, Advanced or DC; has had a 4.0uw so far but is currently getting a B+ in one of her classes; got a 30 on the PreACT & will take the real ACT on June 8; has a lot of ECs (theater, choir, varsity archery, handbells, quick recall, and probably a few others that are slipping my mind). Next year she’ll be in Beta Club and NHS. Outside of school, she’s an ice skater (9+ years), 4-H camp counselor, church cantor and will probably get a summer pt job (for service hours if nothing else). Until I read this thread, I was feeling pretty confident about her TE chances. But, honestly, it sounds like a crap shoot.

Unfortunately it is a crap shoot. Been through it three times now and been surprised (both pleasantly and unpleasantly) each time. My advice is wide net with at least some schools that give TE to most. Mistake to assume that if student is in top X% they have a good shot. My other advice is that if your student is going to overlap at least a couple of years with a sibling, take a look at the “meets full need” colleges and then run your data through the net price calculators. We are two college professors and our financial aid with kids in two of these schools is more generous than standard TE. Stressful process and the TE questions only add to it but great benefit if you end up using. Good luck to all!

Where did ur twins end up going? My son is applying to most of these schools.
