I’m a parent of a TE exported student. I’m hoping my student will be imported into their top choice school. I am wondering whether schools have already started to import students? Anyone hear anything yet?
I don’t have an answer for you but I feel your pain. Waiting to hear on tuition exchange decisions was a real nail-biter… My son had one school award him TE before he was even accepted. My daughter’s top choice did not send the award out until mid-April.
Thank you for the info! The financial aid package came and didn’t mention TE. I was hoping that TE would be mentioned in that but maybe TE is a separate process on its own timeline. The enclosed aid brochure did mention that scholarships can change aid awards so we are still hopeful but it’s definitely a nail-biter! Thanks, @InigoMontoya! Anyone else in the same boat or have some TE award timeline knowledge to share?
Fellow TE parent here. We were denied TE at Pitt but got it for Dusquenne. My DD was accepted to another school, but waiting on TE decision. And waiting on admission status and TE for several others. It is really a nail biter! I think we still have quite a while to wait…
The way it worked at the schools where my kids applied varied:
- Full TE awarded prior to even being accepted
- TE notification at or close to admission decision
- Admission decision and regular financial aid (non-TE awards) came pretty close together, TE came later (most common - and usually many weeks later)
Most of the schools offered merit scholarships at or close to admission, and then followed up later with TE. What’s important to know is how the schools treat TE in relation to other awards. Some schools were very clear - it was one or the other. Most of the time TE was the higher amount, and had fewer strings tied to it, but some safety schools there were competitive merit awards that would have been greater than the TE amount.
Some schools were generous enough to award TE and allow retention of other scholarships up to the total cost of tuition. There are a rare few schools that will allow you to go over tuition, but none of the ones where my kids applied.
We did find ourselves getting a lot of pressure from schools that made early TE decisions. Understandable, since if my kids were enrolling somewhere else, they wanted to offer the TE money to kids on the waiting list. We tried to be considerate of this and notified schools as soon as we could if they dropped out of the top 2 - but with D it was hard since her most wanted TE offer came last. She did decline at every school but #2, but until she heard from #1 she couldn’t afford to cut #2 loose.
Very good to know! Thank you @InigoMontoya. It’s a relief to know that TE notification often happens weeks after admission and finaid notifications. Your idea of letting schools know immediately if they are out of top 2 sounds like a good thing to do for all involved. We’ll be sure to do the same if we’re lucky enough to be granted approval from other importing schools. It sounds like there are a lot of moving parts in this system! So much at stake.
Nope didn’t heard about this. But interested to get some more info.
To anyone with TE experience: I’m wondering how TE works after May 1 and after accepting an “Import School Approved” TE award. Does anyone know what happens to the remaining TE application(s), that are currently “Awaiting Import School Approval”, after a TE award has been accepted and also after May 1? Are the other “Awaiting Import School Approval” TE applications cancelled once a TE award has been accepted or do they stay open over the summer? I am trying to find out if there is a possibility for another “awaiting” TE application to become “Import School Approved” over the summer. And if the other “awaiting” award were to be approved over the summer, is a student’s switching into the later-TE-Import School Award allowed after accepting an award at another school or is accepting a TE award binding? Does anyone know if there is some movement of TE awarded students over the summer into later-import-approved TE schools?
Bumping to top … direct replies would also be welcome
