I am talking about private schools in Texas.

I am about to sign the enrollment for my son. $1500 tuition deposit is due, and I understand that is non-refundable. The school requires FULL tuition to be paid by Jun 15.

My question is: From now to June 15, if for whatever reason we decide not to attend the school, are we obligated to pay the full tuition even though the student hasn't started the school? (The reason I asked is that my kid is on wait list of his first choice school) I couldn't find the answer to this question in the enrollment contract.

Normally it SHOULD be on your contract that you have a certain grace period before you are committed to the whole year. If not…
Two options: call the school and ask or purchase tuition insurance in which case you are free and clear no matter what

Actually, I would read the fine print carefully on any tuition insurance. It usually stipulates that the child must attend the school for a certain period of time - usually a couple of weeks. So, it wouldn’t cover the situation above or any situation where a student changed their mind about attending and never started at the school.

You are most likely speaking of a day school? Is there a May payment with the full on June 15th? If there is, read carefully. If there is just a deposit now, and full by June 15th - you may withdraw from school by loosing out on your deposit. If you do decide to withdraw after June 15th, or in the case of a contract with a May payment, you will be liable for the entire amt, and it will be pretty impossible to go to another school - schools generally have a contract amongst themselves that say if a family committed and then withdrew, no other school may enroll the student without clearance from the first school.

Yes, it is about a day school, not boarding school.

The contract says
“Annual tuition and all other optional fees for services must be paid in full by June 15, 2011…Any student issued an enrollment contract prior to June 1, 2011, and whose tuition is unpaid by July 1, 2011 will lose his or her reserved place in the listed grade with or without notice, whereupon this contract shall automatically terminate.” <==== so based on this paragraph, we are not obligate to pay the tuition if we have to change our mind? (e.g, my kid gets off the wait list from his first choice school?

I’m not a lawyer but I play one at work; You lose your 1500 and reserved spot at school, you are not required to pay the tuition balance. Without reading the entire contract that would be my interpretation.
