^ It’s not going to happen, not in the foreseeable future at least, so don’t worry. :)

I’ll give you an outsider’s perspective on this for U of M. I wouldn’t mind if U of M privatized because it would lead to higher academic standards at my alma mater (GVSU) due to the “trickle down effect”. After saying that, with 15% or so of the budget coming from the state, U of M is pretty much private right now anyway. As for them becoming completely private I don’t think it will happen in the near future. What U of M should do is reduce their freshmen class sizes to about 5,000 and reduce the IS/OOS ratio to about 55/45 or even 50/50. Then they would increase their selectivity, receive more OOS money, and still keep the college public and take the best that the state has to offer (well almost the best, plenty of smart people go to the other “lower tier” Michigan schools).

Who is this superstar? I checked out the salaries of 30 or so Michigan Law professors, and none get paid anything close to that. In general, full professors are paid $175K-286K; assistant professors are paid $158K-175K. Only Dean Caminker is paid above $300K ($442,308). I don’t know how much they pay lecturers, 'cause they are not on the faculty list. But if a program director is only paid $255K, how could they pay a lecturer $500K? Here’s a sample of the law professor salaries (first figure from the general fund):

PROFESSOR
Reuven Avi-Yonah: 32,993 / 267,000
Samuel Bagenatos: 0 / 174,000
Michael Barr: 200,000
Laura Beny: 199,000
Dean Evan Caminker: 442,308

Bruce Frier: 136,250 / 272,500
Samuel Gross: 0 / 261,500 (Thomas and Mabel Long Prof of Law)
Daniel Haiberstam: 183,329 / 213,000
James Hathaway: 51,797 / 255,000 (James and Sarah Degan Prof of Law; Director, Program in Refugee and Asylum Law)

Nicholas Bagley: 158,000
Kristina Daugirdas: 158,000
Monica Hakimi: 166,000

In fact, I think some of these guys are underpaid. For example, Prof Samuel Bagenstos draws a salary of $174K (none form GF) with the following credentials:

“From 2009-2011, he was a political appointee in the U.S. Department of Justice, where he served as the Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, the number two official in the Civil Rights Division.”

Try searching Mark Rosenbaum, who supposedly makes 805K annually. [University of Michigan Salary Search](http://www.umsalary.info/?FName=mark&LName=rosenbaum&Year=0&Campus=0)

FTE stands for “Full Time Equivalent” salary. It doesn’t mean that the University is paying that amount of salary to Mark Rosenbaum. In fact, it says clearly that only $120,763 is paid out from the university general fund.

You have to remember that Law is a graduate degree. You want people with subject matter expertise and years of experience in that area of law teaching the subject. If the University were to hire full time faculty for each of the special areas of law, it would have to hire a lot more law professors.
