Tuiton Reciprocity with Ohio, schools with good OOS tuition/scholarships in Midwest

Ok, so I live in Ohio. Nice state, but I'm looking to go to school outside of the state and then see where life takes me.

OH schools are ok. I like some of the privates, and the one I really like, Dayton, gives out so-so merit aid.

Some of my money safeties are U South Carolina, Alabama, FSU(not sure if I'll get $ though) and Ohio U*. Might add the College of Charleston to the mix too, but IDK.

The thing about OU is that I don't really like the school that much. I'm sure I wouldn't mind it, but it is starting to lose its appeal to me. So following the "Love Thy Safety" approach, I am looking to drop it.

My other $ money safeties are in the South and FSU might not give me anything, I think S. Carolina will give me something and Bama has automatic scholarships, so I'll pretty much know about how much $ I am going to get. But I'm a Jr. and a lot can change in a year when I apply and with colleges shrinking endowments.
And I wouldn't mind adding a school a little closer to home.

I guess it may help to give you some of my stats

Should not change much by SR year.

GPA: 3.85, 4.25 W
SAT, ACT: 1330, 29. I'm still practicing and hoping for a 1400 and 32.
But hopefully I can get at least 1350 or 30.

Some ECs: Eagle Scout, a couple clubs with minor positions(MUN, mock trial, etc...), Track, volunteer a lot, Eucharistic Minister, and some other things.

All right, any suggestions? I'd prefer a big school, but anything over 5k students will do.
And I'd like total COA to be <$20k at the most, preferably <15k.

I know EMU gives OH residents in-state tuition and I may have to check that out after another visit to UM-AA, but going to school in Yipsi does not exactly excite me.

Doesn't IU give out pretty good scholarships? I've heard they have a really nice campus. I may have to add them to my radar.

I know UMN-TC has extremely low OOS tuition, but I honestly did not like the campus that much, but we were just driving through. Too bad Michigan or Wisconsin didn't have this low of OOS tuition, I'd love to go to one of those two schools.

And I heard somewhere that MSU gives you IS tuition if you have a 32 on the ACT, but a 32 gives you full-tuition at Bama, and I personally like Bama better anyway.

All right those are some schools that I know of. I said I wanted one more midwest school, but it can be anywhere really. Though I think I have the South covered pretty well.

Thanks, kind of a long post.

Edit: And I don't really want anything that is super urban, but then again, not a school that is out in the boonies(part of the problem with OU). But if it is a big enough school, it should not be a problem.

And also, I am looking to major in Political Science or Economics. I might try and double major and might do business/Finance instead of Econ. But right now I'm leaning towards Econ.

…any suggestions?

Are you a National Merit Finalist or Semifinalist?

Not sure, but I doubt it…that would certainly help to get me at least IS rates at a lot of schools. Full ride at Bama, half tuition at USC, etc…

I took the PSAT Wednesday and maybe I got commended, but not finalist.

^ Oh, you’re a junior. If you make finalist, definitely add U Arizona.

Otherwise, there are a number of southern schools (Clemson, Alabama, Miss State, etc.) that offer good merit aid. I wouldn’t want to live there myself (the humidity would kill me), but one might be a fit for you.

^^^
There isn’t humidity in Alabama during the school year. This isn’t Houston, Tx…LOL

In Alabama…humidity is bad in July and August. But fall and spring are super, and winter isn’t too cold…

To the OP…

So, you’re a junior right? You just took the PSAT. Well, did you take it last year, too? If so, how did you do last year?

Don’t lose hope with your test scores. both my boys had 29 ACT scores the beginning of junior year, but after taking them again they ended up with ACT 33.

I’m guessing that is your SAT of M+CR…what is your total SAT…and what are the individual scores

Do you use practice books? If not, get some and use them. I recommend the ones put out by Collegeboard and the one that ACT company sells. I think its called, “the real ACT” or something like that.

Your money at Dayton will go up as your scores go up.

Where I live now (Alaska), it rarely gets hot enough for humidity to make the heat index a problem. I used to live in Colorado and have spent time in all the Four Corners states, where heat is dry and mornings are cool. But even southern Virginia (which is cooler than Alabama) is way too muggy for me during much of the year.

Climate preferences are obviously subjective, so the OP may feel differently.

Thanks for the responses.

Yep, Bama has been on my radar for a while, took a campus visit, and I really like the school.
Heat probably won’t be a problem, but it will definitely be a welcome change over the snow. When I used to live in NoVA and it snowed, people went nuts and freaked out, it will be interesting to see what happens in Bama, though it is probably rare.

And, I don’t think my money at Dayton will be that great, because I think that their awards max out at something like 12k-15k a year. Which isn’t that bad, but UD costs $40k+.

I did about 2 hours of prep a week for the PSAT for about 4-5 weeks through my school and saw my scores rise a little. I’ve done a little bit of work with the SAT/ACT and my current #s are less than 29(28) and 1330 (1260) but I think I can at least get them up to 29 and 1330…though hoping for more.

I’m probably going to buy the Blue Book and Real ACT and hit them real hard over Christmas.

Thanks.

Dayton’s merit maxes at $27k per year, but that is for top stats.

Have you talked to your parents about what they can afford each year? That’s important to know. Do you know what their EFC would be?

When did you visit Alabama??? Glad to hear that you liked it…very nice campus. And, you’d qualify for the honors college. What did your parents think?

I noticed that you’re a EM for church, so I assume that you’re Catholic. Did you notice St. Francis church across the street?

Oh, good catch with the Dayton $ thing. I must have gotten COA mixed up with scholarship value. About About 12k a year wouldn’t be that bad, but like you said, you need top stats.

Kind of talked with my parents about finances, and I know that full-priced 50k privates, with no aid, are out of the question. But I think my family could handle 30 thousand, maybe 35 thousand, tops. But I’d like to save them some money and undergrad is not as important as grad school. And I like Bama, FSU, and S. Carolina more than some of my matches and reaches, so I don’t really mind going to a cheaper school.

I visted Bama last spring when classes were in session. Tuscaloosa was really nice and the visit bumped Bama up to #2 on my list. My parents seemed to think it was really nice too. My dad was confused why I picked Bama, he thought I was just picking a random school to visit. But Bama got on my radar because of scholarships and then the visit sealed the deal for me, I’m applying to Bama for sure, and I wouldn’t be surprised if I end up going to school there.

Yep, I’m Catholic. No honestly, I did not notice the Catholic Church(at least I don’t remember). But so much went on that day and there was some construction in Ttown, so maybe that affected things.
But your not the first one to tell me that there is a Catholic Church right across from campus. Which I guess is pretty good, considering Alabama(the state) is probably like 10% Catholic, correct?

Oh and the Honors College sounds like a huge perk. I want to be challenged, but also have a lot of fun. Plus I like that Bama has an enrollment of nearly 30,000 students.

Thanks
