Tulane Diversity

Hi! I was admitted into Tulane during EA, and it’s definitely up there on my list of prospective schools, but I’m a bit concerned about the lack of racial diversity at Tulane. I recently attended a Top Scholars Weekend and it was clear that Tulane isn’t very racially diverse. While I’m sure that it’s diverse in other aspects, I felt a bit awkward being one of the few Asian-Americans present among both the visitors and strolling students.

Because of this, I was wondering if anyone could possibly share some insight as to whether or not this has affected their experiences at Tulane. I would really appreciate it!

Although my son is not considered racially diverse, he comes from a high school where students come from extremely diverse backgrounds. Tulane would be a change. I’m assuming you read that Tulane is very open and accepting and I know if my s goes (also at Top Scholars) he would appreciate the cultural diversity. Don’t let that stop you!

I was the only Asian in my department at my college but didn’t bother me a bit. Embrace your race and jump in! Doubtful you’ll encounter racism at Tulane.

I totally get that feel, and it was the initial reason I wasn’t really considering the school (i.e. I visited and felt like an alien, it was OUT OUT OUT of the picture for me). I don’t know if you were invited and attended the PreviewTU program this year (I think it’s new) for prospective students of color but I can assure you there is a very small (bordering on hidden) but certainly existent niche of POCs at Tulane and I think the only way to really uncover it is to go. A really good example of this and part of the reason I will now be attending (besides the stellar architecture program and community service) is “the O”. The Office of Multicultural Affairs run by Mrs. Carolyn (loooovvveee her). It’s still a pwi in the deep south but is certainly taking the effort to encourage and protect diversity. Some other really great faculty: Ms. Toni Riley and Satyajit Dattagupta (Satcha for short) they’re in admissions but organized the Preview so they may be able to bridge any gaps you may have on this. I’ve already suggested they add visits to the O to the regular tour schedule as it really was a huge relief/push on my second visit, and what ultimately allowed me to fully consider the school. Hope to see you in the Fall!!! https://www2.tulane.edu/studentaffairs/intercultural/contact.cfm
