Tulane or Nova?

I was accepted as a transfer to Nova and Tulane. I am a philosophy major and I would consider myself on the liberal end of the spectrum. Prestige is pretty important to me, as well. I would appreciate any input to help me make this decision.

Tulane probably has more name recognition than Nova. Their philosophy department seems quite strong. If I were you, I'd spend some time reviewing each college's philosophy department's website in depth. Additionally, I'd suggest contacting a couple professors at each college with any questions.
(I suggest a couple at each school to allow for the fact that summer may be harder to reach people).

I can't comment on the environment at Nova but I can say that Tulane is quite a liberal campus. S goes there and loves that aspect about it.

You probably already have the general rankings for both schools. But maybe someone here can comment on the quality of the philosophy departments and how they'd compare.

Isn't Nova more conservative? If you're more liberal, then maybe you would prefer Tulane.

What's a Nova? The Community College in Northern Virginia used to be called Novacoco which I thought was a really cool name but I am pretty sure that is not the Nova you are talking about.

Well I guess if you are interested in prestige that tells you how much weight Nova carries with me :-) Then again I am not the bellwether for prestigious Philosophy Departments.

lmao what the hell is nova? who knows...tulane winds without a second thought.

There are some extremely interesting people in the philosophy department at Tulane, among them people who will carry on discussions with you via e-mail when you find that ideas from their classes are affecting your thinking in other classes. That has been my son's recent experience, and I have been very impressed by it.

Nova is a good school, but I have heard nothing of its phil dept.

Best to you in your decision.

Thanks Ctymom. This is the kind of feedback I was looking for, as opposed to people randomly bashing 'Nova.

Is your location a Kerouac reference by any chance?

Nova = horrible
Tulane = one of the best schools in the country!!

That's a bit harsh, JH.

Thanks, Harness. It's only a bit of a reference. I used to read Kerouac--who didn't? But I do live on the road in an RV full-time. Our son prefers to tell people his parents are homeless.

"Our son prefers to tell people his parents are homeless."

Harness - Yup, sounds like a typical Tulane student to me. And having visited Villanova, I simply can't visualize students there describing their families thusly.

PS, I think a brief visit to each school would settle the issue for you. Good luck with your decision!

I'm not sure what that means, NewHope, but I hope it doesn't mean they have no sense of humor. Our son has a fine one, and that's what's showing when he enjoys that particular line. If we were offended by it, he wouldn't say it.
