Tulane or UT Austin for pre-med and eventual medical school?

Hi everyone! So I’ve been agonizing over this decision for a while now and I don’t feel like I’m getting anywhere with it. I’ve been accepted to Tulane with a $32k scholarship, and while I’m out of state for UT Austin right now, my dad has gotten a job in Texas and intends to move there, so I should qualify for instate tuition after my first or second year at UT. Back of the envelope calculations say Tulane should cost $72k in tuition over 4 years while UT should cost $74k, so cost isn’t really a big factor in this decision.

I’ve gone over the Texas medical school applications and how tuition varies across medical schools and so on, and it seems based on that, UT Austin is the right choice, since I’d be instate for Texas medical schools. On the other hand, I really really liked the environment of Tulane and I really felt at home on my visit. Texas was nice too, but it didn’t compare… what should I do? Do the pre-med programs (like counseling and advising) compare? Do the matriculation rates compare?

If cost is not an issue then go to the one you feel most fits you academically and socially. UT will have huge intro classes. One thing to remember is that a smaller school will give you an environment that will facilitate building relationships with professors for LOR when medical school apps come due.

That’s definitely true. I hear though that UT has small enough classes come 3rd or 4th year, how true is that?

And I guess my big question is how much harder or more expensive does it become to apply to out of state medical schools? Are tuition rates that different? How often do medical students go out of state?
