Tulane University Announces Bold Renewal Plan

I understand regarding the agreement but that agreement was made when the students were expecting to be able to return to Tulane and continue their education in their field. With no longer offering those majors those students and the other institutions should not be held to that agreement. Just my opinion.
The large merit-aid makes the decision even more difficult.

I would agree that in light of the announcement that certain majors are being eliminated, there would be no "poaching" going on by allowing special dispensation for those affected students.

Hi Mom60 -- if your dd is still there, could you ask her to take a peek at Warren 327A? That's my dd's room and I'd love to know if anything's there. Her roommate never showed up and has not been heard from since, so anything in that room SHOULD theoretically be my dd's.

geena- my D's roommate never showed up either and no emails from her since late august. I will ask then to walk up. My D was on the mezzanine level. I don't know if they can see anything without a key. Did your D ask for a all female dorm. Mine was not happy about it. And her location in the building was also not great. across from the Head RA's apartment and no other rooms on her little landing floor. My D has bad asthma so she will not be returning. I think her not so good experience moving in at least help us in convincing her that she might need to wait awhile before returning to NO.

Thanks Mom60! It occurred to me after I posted that they probably need a key. Funny about the roommates. The last dd heard from hers was an anxious message about going so far from home and knowing no one, a few days before orientation. Then nothing. I called and left her several messages since dd and family could not receive phone calls but could only call out occasionally from Baton Rouge while they waited out Katrina, and I thought she (the roommate) might be trying to reach dd, but no response.

DD was not happy about the all women's dorm either, and has asked for a different assignment if possible for next semester at Tulane. She is going to Willamette in Orgeon this semester and ended up on their one all-women's floor, much to her chagrin <g> but it has been a wonderful experience for her. The girls have become so close and, judging from the photos, have had no problem making plenty of guy friends. </g>

I just hope that dd has a similar experience at Tulane. With two older sons in college, it has become clear to me that the people you meet in the first couple of hours affect your entire 4-years tremendously.

I hope that your dd has a last three years, wherever she ends up.

Mom60, I MEANT to say I hope your dd has a GREAT last 3 years, wherever she ends up. LOL "A last three years" -- well, let's hope she doesn't have those till she's 90 or so!

interesteddad - I would think - and hope (whether it applies to my S or not) - that the agreements not to "poach" would no longer apply to students whose major field of study is being eliminated.

We shall see.

The Live Chat is currently "up" for anyone who wishes to post questions in advance of the chat at 5pm CST. I have peppered it with my own questions. Would appreciate the support of anyone who would go there and post questions. <a href="http://www.liveworld.com/events/tulane/%5B/url%5D">http://www.liveworld.com/events/tulane/</a></p>

What about kids who have not declared majors? Should they be forced to return assuming they might have chosen one of the major fields of study no longer offered at Tulane?

I've done the same, jm. I hope they will be honorable about it and not duck the relevant questions. I have had faith so far. Let's hope it's justified!

Venado, I would assume that people know whether they were ever interested in the eliminated majors at all. If they were, then they have a reason to leave. If not, then they don't. I would hope no one would complicate things by feigning interest in one of the eliminated fileds just to get an easier transfer. Things are tough enough for everyone as it is.

I am with you jmmom, and have posted my own questions.

I would think that if you had not applied/were not enrolled in the College of Engineering nor given reasonable evidence that the Exercise/Sports field which was eliminated was your interest, you would not get any of the "benefits" (hah!) of the elimination of these fields.

I agree with ctymom~ Those of us who will be pressing Tulane to support our needs, as students or parents of students in these fields, don't need others complicating matters.

I know that I would be seriously thinking about how to find a different school at the earliest possible date.

Having said that, there are some sticky financial implications for people who have paid Tulane in advance for a semester or for people who have fat merit aid scholarships. Those implications pretty much forced most students to take advantage of the free-tuition deals at another school for the first semester or, at this late date, might well require going back to Tulane for the second semester.

I guess the good news for your son is that there are plenty of science and math pre-reqs to be getting out of the way, so going back to Tulane for a semester probably wouldn't derail an engineering track elsewhere. I'd hate to be a second semester engineering sophmore right now.

geena
I spoke briefly with my husband a little while ago. The connection was bad so I didn't talk long. He said the ground floor of Warren is totally torn up making access to the building difficult. They have not seen any other students just construction workers. They had to check in at another dorm due to the construction.
They are staying at the Pontchartrain. The first room was in good shape but the shower had no water. The room they moved them to has peeling paint on the walls and the shower curtain was full of mold and the handle on the shower was broke. My D said the hotel room was nicer then the one's she stayed at in India but not much. Many of the hotel windows are boarded up. They asked to move back to the old room but the front desk clerk was not able to log back into that room. They are going to try to see what can be done when they get back this afternoon. There parking was also destroyed so you have to find street parking. Just a heads up to those who might be booked in January.
Jmmom- any specific questions you want me to post?

Interesteddad

Which is exactly where my son is, and it stinks He will check with his current institution, which is where he hopes to transfer, and see what classes he should take at Tulane in order to transfer credits and get on track for their degree. If the credits are few, Cowen will have accomplished what Katrina couldn't, and he will sit out for a semester.

I am going to post questions as well. Thanks jmmom.

I know, interesteddad! I'm a sophomore who's riding with a 18K DHS. I applied to U of Rochester but got only 5K and the ppl who handled transfer admissions told me there's no way they can offer me more... I did everything I can to woo them including a campus visit and a transfer interview right before Thanksgiving. I'm so desperate now. I turned down Emory and UIUC to attend Tulane, then now I'm again away from a school where I can receive the education I want. I applied to U of Rochester out of desperation thinking that a Tulane education will no longer be the one I originally pursued. Lately, I've been overwhelmed by everything. Finals, shipping all my crap at Michigan State to my aunt's place since my home is across Pacific ocean, dealing with the crummy aid from U of Rochester. I thought I was strong enough to deal with everything since I'm a guy, but I almost broke down yesterday when talking to my parents. They told me they can live a frugal life and afford 40K a year for me to attend U of Rochester, but I don't have the heart to say "Yes! Gimme the money! I don't care what kind of life you can get!". Not until yesterday did I realize how much support they've poured into me over the past 19 years. Katrina, a great lesson learned, yet she broke my heart. And I believe yours too. Be strong everyone. We'll pull this through.

zhou, what a wonderful son you are. I am so moved by how overwhelming this is for you, yet how caring you are, and how your spirit shows through in your closing sentences. Yes, we will be strong and we will pull this through, helping each other as much as we can.

Thank you so much for the info, Mom60.

Bless you Zhou. We've seen the good and bad this last two years.

Best of luck everyone. My son almost went to Tulane and it would have been for the $16 k money.

30 years ago my school, St. Louis U., announced a week into the Spring Semester that they were closing the engineering school at the end of the semester. There were threatened law suits because of people relying on them and late notification. The results were a settlement that all engineering students were given $800 per semester (a lot of money back then and 1/2 of a decent private school tuition back then) for the remainder of their 4 year term of school. The transfer went well for me. Engineering curriculums tend to be somewhat the same, so it wil turn out ok if the money turns out ok. Such a settlement will be peanuts compared to the money Tulane saves by closing the programs.

My advice. Certainly as a soph and probably as a junior, live in a dorm at your new school.
