What type of traffic does Mastodon, or Post generate? Are they viable alternatives if there are digital tumbleweeds blowing around?
Back to President Biden. He tweeted about signing the Marriage Act 30 minutes ago. It has generated 1300+ comments, 1800+ retweets and 11000+ likes in 1800 seconds. Will there be a single post on Mastadon today that will come close to these numbers? It’s honestly a question because I have no experience with the other platforms.
There’s a thread for what Elon is doing. There is an entire politics subforum for what Joe Biden is doing. None of that discussion belongs in this thread. Please stick to topic.
A tip I read for how to make curating your new follow list a little easier - find a few people you enjoyed following on the other app, add them and then check out their following list to find others you may know. Also, if you had a lot of left of center political pundit follows on Twitter, Seth Abramson has posted a list of prominent people in that sphere, with links to their profile that you can click on and then add, which saves a lot of thinking and searching. I found several that I had not yet added. (He actually did two lists, Part 1 and Part 2, so look for both posts if this is of interest.)
Lots of nice photos being posted to Post - pets, scenery, art. A refreshing change from the current tone of Twitter.
Thanks! I’ve just started the follow the followers trick. Funny about Seth–knew him online when he was just a guy who posted in 00’s and early 10’s Facebook groups on writing and MFAs. Smart but could be a huge pain too. Known for impervious text bricks and talking over everyone else. Argued with him a couple times there. Was flabbergasted when all of a sudden he emerged years later as major left-wing commentator. But I will definitely check out the links. Thanks!
Who are the most prominent members of Mastodon and Post? How many followers do they have? How often do they post? What is it called when someone tweets on Mastadon…mastering?
I’ve been on Post for a few days now and am liking it.
A few people I would like to see on there haven’t moved from Twitter (yet?) but I am finding Twitter to be changing quite a bit in the last few days(and not in a positive way). And my newsfeed no longer has as many new posts as it used to have.
Lastly, I now have a very unwanted follower and I’m not seeing how I can block them. Not happy about that at all. (Update: just learned how to block them! Thank goodness!)
Much fewer posts from those I follow (historians, writers, European news journalists).
My trending topics, and my “of interest to you” is no longer sharing topics that interest me (as now I’m seeing significantly much more sports and entertainers, and far right extremists….none of which I care about viewing).
And seemingly a significant uptick in promotional
Ads. Like tons more. It’s feeling like how FB got before I eventually deactivated FB. (SO many ads).
I don’t like scrolling forever to see and read new posts. And then even the posts are being repeated.
So frustrated is the feeling. I don’t like it.
ETA: I have not changed who I follow.
And I told my H that I went ahead and deleted my Twitter app and he asked why…I told him the above reasons and he quickly said the same is happening with his trending topics etc bc nothing no longer is of interest to him either.
This is not an exaggeration. The number of ads especially for gambling has cluttered my timeline to the point of me seriously considering checking out Post.
I block all ads now. Sending a message to advertisers. I don’t see that many anymore. But I see too many complaining about Twitter. I don’t see the breaking news I used to see.
