"Two Eagles Make College Choices" (Abilene, TX)

Offensive lineman Alec Egan has been admitted to Princeton, while wide receiver Prentice Ashford will stay close to home at McMurry.

Egan, one of two returning starters on offense, posted a season grade of 94.3 percent with 22 pancakes and one sack allowed. He was a first-team selection on The Associated Press Sports Editors Class 5A all-state team and honorable mention on the Texas Sports Writers Association all-state team.

For Egan, gaining acceptance to an Ivy League school was a long-term project.

"The whole process started a couple of years ago," he said. "What football did for me was get me into this school. Admission to Princeton is so ridiculous. You've got a better chance of winning the Texas lottery than getting into Princeton.

"Me getting in was the hard part. It's not just about straight A's. It doesn't matter how good my GPA is. They rejected something like 300 valedictorians this year. That was a big draw for me, that the academics are so rigorous. I'm getting really excited about that aspect of it."

There is also the historical significance of being part of the program.

Princeton played Rutgers in what is recognized as the first college football game in 1869 and was a major force on the national scene through the early decades of the 20th century.

"Princeton is older than the country itself and they've been playing football for a really long time," Egan said. "It's really rich in tradition. For a long time, they were the premier college football team of the whole U.S. and have national titles on top of that.

"The Princeton-Yale game, I think, is the second-oldest rivalry in the country and the Harvard-Princeton game is huge, too. They get a lot of fans out for those games. It's a lot of fun, a lot of intense competition."
