Two essay topics I'm having trouble deciding between

  1. I got a D in Algebra I my freshman year, got put in remedial, retook the class. My senior year, I am now taking Calculus I and II and tested out of precalculus.

  2. I was my one of my teachers’ unofficial aids sophomore year in addition to a student in their class. I was even allowed to edit the final and take it early. I got a 99 in the class as well. I learned to appreciate a lot from it.

  1. You won't be the only essay along these lines that the reader sees. But that doesn't mean you can't do a great job with it. Make sure you concentrate on the steps you took, on what you learned about yourself and how you grew.
  2. This one I'm less confident on, maybe it's just because we don't have enough info. You were allowed to "edit the final and take it early"??? Of COURSE you did well--- you saw the test before it was given!

Personally, I would keep looking. I would come up with a story that’s unique to you.

I think it’s important to remember that your essay does not have to be about academics, and indeed, it probably shouldn’t. Every other part of your application will inform the college of your academic accomplishments. Give them a piece of yourself that you don’t show at school. For example, I wrote about my love of family game night and card playing.

Dig deeper to come up with a topic that shows who you are. You want to use the essay to make your app human. Perhaps your GC or one of your recommendesire could incorporate some element of the topics mentioned above.

Yawnsville. Come now, I expect better from you. Write about the not-real books and your fantasy life, and how your fantasy self is like the real you.

That’s a really good idea.
