I’m considering double major in Civil Engeneering (BS) and Geography/Environmental Studies (BA) as my University doesnt offer Environmental engeneering, but also I like the widened job prospect with Geography/Environmental Studies. I would like to get a minor in sustainability and also a minor in Environmental Science
How will you fit all that coursework, along with any General Ed requirements, into 8 semesters?
You will have to talk with your academic advisor at the college to see if it would be do-able in four years. A lot will depend on how much overlap there is between the areas, what your college allows (ex. my D’s college only allows one minor), any credits you go into college with, and the number of required general ed classes.
I am a double major (math/CS), double minor (music/dance), so it can be done, but it really depends on your degree requirements. Engineering majors typically have a lot of requirements, so it may not be possible to double major and take on a minor on top of that.
The challenge with engineering is that it usually requires more credits to get the degree than most majors. Their schedules are usually pretty sequential so it can be hard to schedule other courses and still remain on schedule. You have the additional challenge of wanting majors within two different colleges within a university. Each will have it’s own criteria for graduation. The minors may be possible if your major has a number of the core courses for the minor(s). As was mentioned the only way to find out would be to ask the departments.
I will say that many HS students, especially high achieving HS students, feel they should be able to do a lot more than they probably should (and will). Engineering students on the whole don’t complain about being bored and needing more to do.
- are you at the right University?
- Can you talk to your adviser about classes to take that would meet your needs?
- You don’t necessarily have to major/minor…you can just take additional classes in the areas of interest.
Civil Engineer with a concentration in sustainabilty
Are you in college already or a high school student?
The best choice would be civil engineering with an environmental concentration. Adding a minor to an engineering major is very difficult and it’d be reserved to a student with quite a few AP credits already.
Getting One major and two minors are manageable. Two majors and two minors is too much.
If you did all those majors/minors, how many extra classes would it be? You can also just take courses that will feed your passions and be useful in your future career without fulfilling another major or minor requirement. Not everything you get out of college has to be noted in your diploma. (Check to see if any of the courses you’re interested in are restricted to majors/minors only, just in case.)

per other thread, OP is currently an ES major. In the colleges I know best you have to direct-admit to engineering, but the OP may be some place where you can just major in it?
