Two matches, one safety for econ/eng

Bump........

If you want engineering, you're better off applying to HMC. I'm pretty sure that although you can take some HMC classes, you can't actually major in engineering if you're a student at Pomona.

I read an article that basically said "Don't limit your study options while in college". HMC doesn't provide enough flexibility in terms of majors, should I decide I don't want to do engineering.

Also, bumping this because I desperately need to find schools. Are you guys (Alexandre especially) sure NU and CMU are matches? And how good of financial aid can I expect from them? Our income is 75,000-80,000.

Bump...I would like to have this finalized. If you guys don't want to do all the work for me, then if you could direct me to resources that would prove useful, I would be appreciative.

Either way is fine...

Temple is a warzone.

Have you checked out the resources at princetonreview and collegeboard?

Cornell is a reach, not a match. Maybe a lower reach than your other choices, though.

Tufts
University of Rochester
University of Maryland (probably bigger than you want)
Johns Hopkins
University of Pittsburgh
Villanova

It's always amazing to me when people on college confidential scoff at a person's desire to spend 4 years in a place that is safe, as if walking around with minimal concern for being attacked is some sort of wimpy attempt at avoiding the real world. TUOwls, if you feel great at Temple, fine, but don't slam somebody else for preferring a different environment.

Okay, this is what I have established so far.

Reach:

Stanford
Princeton
Pomona

Low Reach:

Cornell
Claremont-McKenna

Match:

Northwestern
Pitzer

Safety:

(Nothing)

I'm close. I've looked at Bucknell, but the Greek prominence did not appeal to me. Dartmouth's lack of engineering wasn't appealing, as I think I mentioned earlier. As you can see by the inclusion of three Claremont colleges, they really are a place I could see myself attending.

I just need one safety, which I guess could be a state school. Which ones would be true safeties, financially? Or are most of the non-top 25 ones generous with their merit-aid for someone who has my stats?

Dartmouth has engineering...all the Ivies do. Though some do it much better than others.

I don't want to apply to every Ivy...

Bump...I'll repost from the last page.

More bumps.

Depending on what you want Dartmouth might be a perfect option. Its engineering curriculum for undergrads is great and if you are interested in business after graduation (finance, venture capital, consulting) or graduate school in engineering its hard to beat. Its not great at getting you into tranditional engineering jobs like a IE job at boeing, but quite frankly few of the Ivies/ top programs are geared this way.

If you need a safety, look at Cal Poly, both Pomona and SLO

amciw,

Northwestern and Claremont-McKenna should swap in post #33.

Okay, I'll add Dartmouth, too. My APUSH teacher went there, and he's writing me a rec. It should help a bit (will they know he is without me saying, though?) Is their FA good, though? I can't afford more than $15k a year for family contributions.

As for California public universities, that is where I was planning to look at for safeties. I do not want to go to SLO, because I do not want to have to settle on my major going in. I was more looking at the UCs, specifically UCLA, UCI, and UCB. I know they are big, and more difficult to get into OOS (and more expensive). What kind of merit aid could I get from them? I have double legacy at UCI, and my father went to UCLA for graduate school.

I would prefer to not go above ten.

Yeah Dartmouth FA is usually very generous.

Okay, good. That's reassuring.
