Two students from one school?

If I’m pretty positive a girl from my school is getting into Amherst (she got an early write from Swarthmore and Williams, my other two top schools), is there ANY chance in hell i will also get in? i am almost at her caliber, but not quite there. i have some interesting academic interests that might give me an edge, though, and i am a legacy while she is not.

is there ANY way the school would take two kids from one school, or should i give up hope now?

Of my graduating class of ~135, Amherst admitted 6 and waitlisted 3.

From a competitive high school, Amherst may admit anywhere from 4-12 students, taking into account that not all of them will enroll.

Since you’re a legacy, and if you’re academically qualified, Amherst may accept you alongside your classmate, since it’s ambiguous whether she will enroll and it’s more likely that you will enroll.

No college has the rule “oh, we’re only taking one kid from each school.” If they want both of you, they’ll take both of you - not put you two head to head to decide who gets in.

Also: early writes from one school does not guarantee acceptance at another. Not all colleges are looking for the same things, even when the schools are similar.

My school had two students admitted ED (both were athletes). Initially, this scared me a bit since I was convinced that they wouldn’t take any more students (They still might not, for all I know). BUT they’re definitely willing to take more than one from one school - it was a pretty popular college this year at my school, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they end up taking more than two students.

Relax, there is no “school quota”. You being a legacy is a leg up if your stats are similar.
