U Del vs. Penn State?

So Jec,

What do you make of the Forbes rankings??

Penn State and U of Delaware are both very good schools. When I was in high school, I remember my academic counselor told me to apply to both of them (a lot of very intelligent people from my school went to U DEL). I ended up applying to (and later enrolling in) Penn State, as it has a slightly better academic reputation. However, I also liked that Penn State was a larger school, and if that's not what you like, then U DEL may be a better fit.

Personally though, I also didn't want to go through life routing for a team called the "Blue Hens" (haha...only kidding).

yoUDee is adorable!!! Beats saying you're a beaver...

Popsicle, PSU students are Nittany Lions.

And OP, the cheer goes "WE ARE... PENN STATE." No one ever cheers for Delaware. I once saw a stat that said one in every 120 college students EVER went to Penn State.

Beaver is the name of our stadium, we are the Nittany Lions. Thank you fencersmother, for pointing that out. And yes, I am sure your hen is adorable, I was merely making a joke.

Duh I knew you were the Nittany Lions. I meant that Blue Hens is hardly a bad name. Oregon is the Beavers and I know people at Syracuse - Orangemen? He looks like Meatwad from Adult Swim. But I wouldn't go on their boards and say it was stupid.
And as a proud Blue Hen I say if you don't like the school so much, joking or not, why are you posting here? As a lifelong Red Sox fan (my parent's first date was in the bleachers) stop embarrassing us!

Popsicle, CALM DOWN, I was making a joke. The Blue Hen is a fine name, I was only trying to lighten things up a bit. And for the record I'm a Patriots fan and don't like baseball :)

Geez calm down? How superior!
Anyway, you should change your nameto NewEnglandFan. I think it changed from the Boston Patriots about 40 years ago? I'll forgive you if you like the old TD Pat logo better than the flying Elvis head one.

My daughter still has a shot for UPENN. She has the class rank and SAT's, but her GPA suffered this year and last year. But UofD will probably be her school.

Boston,
The funny part of it is that Blue Hens have been extinct in Delaware for a long time. Not sure how long, but it was on one of those local cable shows about Delaware history.

Penn State is top notch, and I am from PA. The agriculturial school and research is world famous. And the Medical School, with the aid of the Hershey Trust, is top notch. It is just hard to compare UofD with Penn State.

My only complaint with Penn State is that they went into the corporate training business in the 1990's. They built a mini campus near me; when I lived in PA. It was purely a greedy move, and it cheapened the MBA program.

UofD is outstanding, considering Delaware has a population of 500,000. But overall it is not in the league of Penn State.

UPenn is a great school but the surrounding area is questionable. A lot of crime.

MBJ...If rankings do not mean anything why isn't your son in a community college instead of Emory? Emory is known as the "Harvard of the south".

Sunset,
One of the letters we received from Penn actually had a disclaimer about disclosure of crime stats. They tried to minimalize it by saying all colleges were required to disclose crime stats.
I am from the philly burbs and know the area.
Penn is not the only major university with this problem, it seems like the bad element evolves around them. Rutgers comes to mind.

Hi Applemom
My D is also waiting on Delaware...it's alot closer to home

If your D is going for something technical - engineering or science Penn State all the way!
I'm not sure about other majors which school is better.

US News and World Reports ranks Penn State at around 50 and U Del at around 75 (if that helps)
Penn State also has a great network for jobs and stuff.

With all that said, I still like Delaware more.

Good Luck

Does anyone know which school would be better for biology or pre-med or would they be around the same? Just curious. Also explain why please.

I’ve visited both schools. I’m not sure which would be better for biology or pre-med. You can check their websites to compare pre-med advising. I don’t think either one has a med school or hospital on campus, which will limit research opportunities.

Both of these are excellent schools. Penn State has great spirit and football. It also has a stronger national reputation. On the other hand, it is much bigger than Delaware and is in a very isolated location. Some kids love spending four years in “Happy Valley”, but it might get boring for a student from the NYC area. Delaware has the advantage of accessibility also. I’m not sure if there is any public transportation to Penn State from New York. I live in Maryland, and the only option we have is to drive 4 hours over a mountain.

Yes, there is transportation from PSU to NY!!.(albeit by bus). I am from NJ suburbs, not far from NYC. I go to PSU-UP and love it! (and I got into UDel as well). PSU may be rural, but its a great college town. Everything you need is right there. Maybe I’m lucky b/c I can do the ‘city stuff’ on breaks, but I love being in the walkable small town, with just students, etc But to each his own…
