My D got accepted into Ross last week. I am wondering if other people are considering the newly announced freshmen Ross living community at West Quad. What are the pros and cons? How does one search for a room mate ?
Congrats on the Ross admittance.
West Quad is remodeled with A/C and gorgeous and it has one or two courtyards in the middle that give it the appearance of an Ivy League or British-like “house” or similar. Right across the street is the South Quad dining hall. Great access to Central Campus, IM and Greek life. Also, the new student union will be opening in January 2020 and there’s an underground connection between West Quad and the Student Union.
My kid used the admitted students Facebook page to find a roomate.
Thanks so much!
My son lived in West Quad last year. I call it the Hotel Quad. It’s very nice and great location as stated above and a few minutes walk to central classes.
West Quad is nice (they use it to house a good number of the athletes along with South, East, and some North Quad), though personally (as a current Ross student) I am SO SO glad I did not have a hall of all Ross students… first year you don’t spend as much time in Ross tbh, but once you get into second year on you spend a ridiculous amount of time in the building (fortunately it’s a really nice building!). You know or recognize pretty much everybody. I loved my dorming experience because I got to know a bunch of people who studied all sorts of things and meet new people; meanwhile, a lot of Ross people I’d end up meeting anyway. I’m sure some people will like having everyone be the same major but for me I think that would have been a drawback. Plus, I loved my dorm (I may be biased, but East Quad is the best! <3) However, if your daughter likes having a homogenous experience, maybe that would be for her!
As far as potential concerns: One thing to keep in mind though is that, in my experience, generally other students get irritated by people who only seem to talk about how they’re in Ross (can come across a bit elitist/bragging/etc when it’s constantly brought up), so a personal curiosity of mine is whether a hall full of all Ross kids might perpetuate that kind of behavior since the thing bringing everyone together in that living situation is Ross.
If your daughter is concerned about where she ends up dorm wise, I’m going to be honest and say she really shouldn’t be. Yes everyone likes to poke fun at (for example) Markley or the North Campus dorms but honestly just about everyone I know adores whatever their freshman year dorm was, whether that was South or Baits or Oxford. Some may be slightly more convenient or etc, but they all have their advantages and disadvantages and the reason people ultimately love their dorm is because of the people living that life with them.
Regardless of what your daughter does (congrats to her! Ross has been a great experience and UM has changed my life! I’ve made my best friends here and learned a lot) I don’t think there’s necessarily a wrong choice though just different choices.
@sushiritto, @Knowsstuff and @GoBlueWolverine, Thanks so much !
My son did run into some of the football teams stars in the elevator etc once in awhile BTW.
