I just got off the phone with Alabama Scholarships and they reassured me that Bama is still awarding NMF scholarships to those who are applying now. It’s not too late.

Right now, Bama has over 500 national scholars on campus.

The scholarship includes…

full tuition (including OOS tuition)…worth over $80k
housing…including the wonderful honors super suites
$1k per year
$2000 towards study abroad (and you can use your tuition scholarship towards a semester abroad as well)
laptop

the entire package is worth about $120k

You can email…
scholarships@ua.edu if you care for more info.

I have a question. Do you have to list Alabama as their first choice school to receive the scholarship? I know this is the case with some other schools, one being Vanderbilt.

You have to name Alabama by about late April. So, if you’re considering another school with an earlier deadline for NMF consideration, feel free to name THAT school…and then if you decide to go to Alabama, you can fax in the choice change by that April date. It’s usually around the last Friday in April.

Alabama enrolls 182 National Merit Scholars and 30 National Achievement Scholars freshmen this fall…a record.

The fall 2011 freshman class a record 5,772 students entered the University with outstanding academic credentials.

Once again this fall, we welcomed to campus the largest and most academically talented freshman class in our history, said UA President Robert E. Witt. We are pleased that excellent students are recognizing the quality and value of a University of Alabama education.

Qualifications of the freshman class include:

The class includes 182 National Merit Scholars and 30 National Achievement Scholars. Last year, with 128 National Merit Scholars, UA ranked 6th in the nation among public universities in the enrollment of National Merit Scholars.

Twenty-eight percent of the freshman class 1,614 students had a 4.0 or higher grade point average in high school.

The freshman class was drawn from a record 22,136 applicants, up over 200 percent since fall 2002. UA has become significantly more selective with 53 percent of applicants admitted for fall 2011, down from 85 percent in 2002.
