Yes, a few elite schools (HYPS) are very generous to those who have those incomes. The problem is that some have NCP’s that won’t pay or fill out forms, assets that can’t go towards education costs, or just have incomes that still require an unaffordable amount. Some elites are not as generous as HYPS.

Everyone should wait and see what the final numbers are.

My son got the literature from Alabama as a NMSF and put it aside even though we said to consider it. We are from the NY area and the thought of going that far south did not appeal to him at the time. He has been accepted to a couple of schools high on his list but the merit aid and the need aid vary greatly. His #1 gave nearly no aid at all and he is now thinking more about how much college may end up costing him. Now in January he has read more about the school and the honors program at Alabama and is kicking himself for not applying by the December 1st deadline.

I’m pretty sure that he can still apply and get the full deal. I would suggest that you get him started on the application for admission. He may have missed the deadlines for a few of the Departmental Scholarships and some of the Honors programs, but, even those may be flexible. I’m pretty sure he’ll still be eligible for the tuition/room/NMF stipend. M2CK will chime in here somewhere, but, I’d contact 'Bama today.

Hullo, I’m in the same position as hockedad’s son. Do I need to contact them or should I just send it off? And should I fill out the (2 months late) scholarship app as well?

Send your Bama school app in. You’ll fill the scholarship app out a few days later, after you receive mybama logon info by email.

After you submit your school app, send an email to scholarships@ua.edu Attn Ms. Lindsay Hutcherson Tell her that you’re a likely NMF, that you’ve sent your app in, give your stats, and send your scores and transcripts. She’ll take care of you. :)

Alabama has a brand new mega-sized Science and Engineering Complex. It is very state of the art with new labs, new equipment, and new classrooms.

and, because the state is home to the second largest research park in the nation, Cummings Research Park, there are many opportunities for internships, co-ops, and employment.

BTW…it’s still not too late for a NMF to quickly apply to Bama and get their big scholarship. Bama is lenient with deadlines for NMFs. The app is very easy and doesn’t require any essays or teacher recs…takes like 5 minutes. You’re admitted by stats and high school curriculum.

In the email subject line put: ATTN: Lindsay Hutcherson Re: NMF scholarship

Then, in the body of the email…introduce yourself, mention that you’re a NMF and that you’ve submitted your app to Bama. Give your stats and perhaps your intended major.

Provide your full name, home address, and phone number

Almost a week later, never got a response from email contact to both people listed. Maybe they are very busy… did anyone else apply late for this and hear back from Alabama?

We called UA before my son submitted his admissions application after the scholarship application deadline and confirmed that the NMF scholarship package would still be offered to him. After we submitted his admissions application, we went to his myBama account and found out that the scholarship application could no longer be filled out because it was past the deadline. Because we were concerned about not being able to file the scholarship application, we sent an email to the admissions person for my son’s region to confirm what we had been told on the phoneand it took over a month to get a response because it appeared to have been lost in the system. Once we recieved the response, we exchanged a couple of emails with from someone in the Undergraduate Scholarships dept. who was very timely in responding and said that, as a NMF, our son did not need to fill out the scholarship application, that he did need to send UA confirmation of his status as a NMF, and that he should recieve a letter from UA regarding his scholarship offer the week of March 7th. She also indicated that he did need to submit the Honors College application that can be found on the myBama site.

Your welcome. Betsy Escher was the person from Undergraduate Scholarships. We faxed a copy of my son’s NMF certificate to her yesterday to confirm his status. I really wonder about needing to do that because we had previously been told over the phone that we didn’t need to send anything in because NMSC sends out a list of all finalist to the schools that offer NMF scholarships. Anyway, better safe than sorry.

OK, it’s March 9th. Does anyone know if Alabama would still accept an application from a NMF at this point? I am embarrassed to ask the school myself!
