U of I vs Michigan Engineering

k4 - interesting but not too relevant to OP’s choice which is between 2 big publics. Sounds like MIT is your school - congratulations on that :), but not everyone gets that choice. I am with posters who say in state UIUC vastly better choice than OOS U Mich.

If we were comparing UIUC to MIT and could afford to send S to MIT, I know which would have won. As it is, UIUC EE has been fantastic for S who is really thriving there. Likes the big campus, has a great group of friends, none in frats, lots of diversity and activity on campus. Engineering quad an easy walk from dorms and apartments on the east side of campus. UIUC really has exceeded all expectations - if you live in Illinois and want to go into engineering - you can’t go wrong.

If we lived in Michigan - he’d go to U Mich - also a fantastic school.

^^^ The OP was also asking about U of I / Michigan vs. Stanford, to which I think my experience is relevant.

k4 - so true - I forgot about Stanford as part of the original post. I do have to say that my S was a smaller school guy all the way until the final decision and he really loves UIUC and has never regretted choosing it - never had the problems that you described. On the other hand, D turned UIUC down for a very small school for some of the reasons you stated. Each to his own. I’m just a huge fan of UIUC engineering - S being there has led to some amazing opportunities.

Leaving Stanford out, I still say in-state UIUC over U Mich.
