U of Rochester vs Pitt vs Temple Honors - neuroscience

My daughter wants to study neuroscience and eventually go on to med school. She doesn’t like the city and so she is leaning toward Rochester, but it has quite the price tag.

Wait listed for William & Mary as well as Carnegie Mellon.

Is U of R worth it??

What is total cost relative to the others? The answer is no - because if you go to medical school and few that say they want to will - but if you go, it’s very expensive and the GPA and MCAT will be what matters.

If she doesn’t go to med school, the major leads to poor outcomes.

So cheaper is better.

That said you need to be happy - but you needed an Alabama, Arizona, Miami Ohio, South Carolina, etc. in your mix.

Great schools though…

If medical school is 100% in the cards, save the money and go for the cheapest option.

You don’t say anything in regards to actual price. What are the costs of each? I like UR, but not sure it’s worth full price over Pitt.

If she doesn’t like the city she won’t like Temple. I think Pitt would be a better choice as it is not downtown and plenty of green space around it including Schenley Park.

What are the cost differences of the 3 choices?

Pitt definitely over Temple, esp with the “city” aspect. You’ll have to decide if UR is worth the money or not. Med school is very expensive. My guy had those two as his final two and chose UR, but there wasn’t a huge difference in price for him.

Most students who say they want to attend med school don’t (change their minds, get weeded out) and among those who do qualify after 3-4 years, again most don’t get into any med school. So, choose the best combination of “college you graduate from/no med school” and value (no parental loans).

Temple honors would be tempting (honors is very useful to premeds and they guarantee housing) but if she doesn’t like the city then it’s easier to cut.
Pitt may be a good compromise between Temple and UR in terms of value.
How would you pay for UR?
