I think it is fair to say Stanford’s psycology program is simply #1 in USA and #1 in the world. So are Stanford’s computer science program, statistics program, computational math program, and environment science program. Stanford’s other arguably #1 programs nationally and internationally include business school, educational school, physics, biology, chemistry, and electrical engineering.

Sorry that you can’t seem to accept the truth that we have the best educational system, the best universities and the best medical doctors in the world. The rest of the world is light years behind the quality and expertise of our doctors and engineers. If one can afford a quality education or even a simple surgical procedure they would prefer to come to the U.S. The rest of the world may hate us, but who cares…they are simply just jealous. A college education just like health care is also not a right as per the founding fathers of this country. You do have the right to leave the U.S. and get any inferior education you want or seek any surgeon in some other country. Our study abroad programs are also simply nice vacations for our students before they have to soon leave college and get jobs…they are not going to other countries because they believe they’re getting an inferior education at home. P.S. I’m a proud conservative and Glenn Beck fan.

WaitingDad, the US does not have the best medical doctors in the World. If it did, it would have the lowest infant mortality rate in the World and it would have the highest longetivity in the world, neither which is true. And US Engineers are not the best either. I definitely agree that US graduate programs are the best in the World, but that’s because the US education system is set up to funnel much of its research through its graduate programs whereas in Europe and Asian, most research is condicted at government agencies and think tanks.

US Doctors and Engineers are excellent, but so are doctors and Engineers at at 20 other advanced societies .

And the world does not hate the US, only its cowardly and corrupt politics. To think that the world is “jealous” of the US is irrational. Your assumption that people are jealous of the US implies that you think the US is superior to other countries. That is not a healthy, or respectful outlook. In my experience, most people like Americans and the American culture.

I can understand your nationalistic and patriotic pride. It is healthy for one to love his country. But respecting other nations is also healthy.

In all fairness, the quality of US medical practioners is more han offset by the poor health habits of Americans and the delays in coverage caused by the lack of a universal health system.

“In all fairness, the quality of US medical practioners is more han offset by the poor health habits of Americans.”

cosmicfish, that’s a myth. Europeans eat more fat (white bread, butter and pork are the primary diet of most Europeans), drink more alcohol and smoke more tobacco than Americans. Although I am not expert, most doctors I have met in the States and Europe seem to have a great deal of mutual respect for each other. I never heard a doctor in one country suggest superiority over doctors at other countries.

I would say use the Shanghai JiaoTong’s ranking based on measurable data such as endowment size, awards, etc etc to come up with such a statement. Just because you think that people who know OxBridge also recognize Imperial doesn’t mean it’s automatically top 20. Most engineers who know MIT know Purdue, does that mean Purdue is then a world top 20? maybe in engineering, but not overall since I guess it’s relatively much weaker in its natural sciences and mathematics counterparts.

I am not trying to imply any superiority on the part of US medicine - I was simply trying to say that differences in policies and populations make direct comparisons very difficult.

As to your comments on fat, alcohol, and tobacco, I would love to debate them but this is not the correct place. We have skidded off topic with this exchange - the real question is academic rankings.
