According to the Orientation packet, all student must enroll in the U-SHIP program unless you file a waiver.

We probably have the highest level of coverage from Kaiser Permanente, a total hospital care program that is not an HMO. PPO or standard health insurance package. But it is not avaliable in Illinois. Does any one know if U-SHIP can be waived based on the coverages from KP?

Thanks.

If it will not cover medical and hospitalization expenses incurred in the state of Illinois, then I suppose you will have to enroll.

You (with your student, if you’re a parent) should log in here: <a href=“Student Insurance | UChicago Student Wellness | The University of Chicago”>Student Insurance | UChicago Student Wellness | The University of Chicago;

This is the online waiver application form; it includes a number of questions about the coverage that you currently have to see if you’re waiver eligible. UChicago wants to make sure that your student’s health insurance is as good or better than that available through the school, which means that it must cover medical treatment, hospitalizations, etc. in the state of IL- if this is not available through your current insurance, there would be no way for your student to receive medical care when he/she needs it. So, check through those requirements to see if your insurance qualifies.

Our plan only covers the emergency/hospitalization service, no outpatient service, so, to honestly answer those questions on this web site, our plan is not qualified for waiver.

called around with various insurance agents, no one can beat the USHIP plan for deductable, out of pocket and co-insurance amount( either in or out of network). It is an expense we have not budgeted for, but necessary to have.

Oh well, here it goes…
