Any advice?
U VA (in state, full tuition) or Pitt (out of state, merit brings cost to U VA cost + guaranteed admission to med school)
If your are in the BS/MD program at Pitt congratulations. They except something like 10 students per year.
No Mcats. Year abroad. Electives. Orgo as a pass/fail class.
If you are bright enough to get into UVA and this program. The answer is obvious. If Med school is your goal. IMHO.
My daughter was invited to apply to Pitts guaranteed acceptance to medical school, so I know how competitive the program is based upon the application process ( she did not send in her application).
Both schools are amazing, but if you are sure about medical school then I would choose Pitt. Congrats on such a wonderful option and best of luck!
Concur with others…if you have been accepted to Pitt’s School of Medicine GAP program that is the best route…just not having to take the MCAT makes it invaluable.
Even though Pitt and UVA are similar costs, are you and your family able to pay for it without loans, at least for the undergraduate years? Eight years of school, plus a few years working at lower than market salaries can take a toll on finances, and lead to less than desirable consequences…make sure you have a plan to finance the next 8 years of school.
Congratulations on your acceptances and good luck.
Medical school admission is at another level from college admissions. It is like the big leagues vs. AA in baseball. If you are sure about medical school and the terms of the admission are good (e.g. you don’t get disqualified with a B), the Pitt offer is a good one.
https://www.medadmissions.pitt.edu/programs/guaranteed-admissions-program lists the requirements to retain the guarantee.
The college GPA requirement is 3.75 in BCPM and overall, and the usual pre-med extracurriculars are required. But the MCAT is not required unless applying for the MD/PhD program. Obviously, a Pitt student who retains the guarantee does not need to go through the expensive and stressful process of applying to medical schools the usual way.
3.75 is what pre-meds target for GPA anyway. But you may want to check if it is necessary to earn that every semester, or maintain the cumulative at that level every semester, or if GPA is checked less frequently, to maintain the guarantee.
