UBC Class of 2026 Decisions

She completed her application on Jan 28th and got her acceptance on March 21th.

She will graduating from a California HS with a 3.8 GPA (w). She has some AP’s, speaks three languages (Spanish, French & English). She’s had also strong leadership roles, plenty of volunteer jobs, and is currently working.

She got into UC Davis too, but decided going to UBC because she thinks a much better University and because Davis’s town is very boring.

I’m very proud of my daughter! I wish you all best of luck!

My daughter got the waitlist message in her portal over the weekend, but an acceptance email yesterday. UBC is one of her top choices so most likely she will accept but we want to quickly go see it because we haven’t yet. Any tips on campus tour? Do I need to rent a car? Any advice would be so appreciated. Thank you!!!

I would recommend renting a car at the airport, but an uber/bus works too. It is relatively close, maybe 20 minutes w/o traffic?
The campus is fairly large, but walkable. There are a couple of buildings located downtown, which is definitely not walkable, but the vast majority of buildings are on the main campus. There are some nice trails that go down to the beach that go through lush PNW forest. Great views. The museum of Anthropology is pretty well known, but other newer buildings like the Pharma building are interesting. I would just walk the whole thing. It shouldn’t take more than a day. Hopefully it will be one of those brilliant spring days, rather than a rainy one, but don’t hold your breath. Bring rain gear.
Are you staying near the campus, or nearer downtown?

Thank you so much for your reply! I haven’t booked anything yet since she just got her acceptance last night. Any recommendations on where to stay We will definitely bring our rain gear. We live in Chicago so PNW weather is far preferable to Chicago winters!

I haven’t lived in Vancouver for decades, so my info on hotels will be out of date. You can either choose to stay downtown in the West End(near Stanley Park) or on West Broadway(closer to UBC). Hotel Vancouver is one of the classic great old railway Hotels downtown. The Bayshore is right near Stanley Park and the water. All are a good distance away from UBC, though traffic is light by Chicago standards…I would guess a 35-45 minute drive?
There are lots of hotels of varying levels on West Broadway that are closer to UBC. The further west on Broadway you get, the closer to UBC, and the more residential, till you eventually get to the West Point Grey area, which is very nice. Beaches are beautiful(Jericho Beach Park), and you can gawk at the very expensive houses.
If you are looking for convenience rather than sightseeing, find a hotel/BNB in Kerrisdale which is a nice/boring residential area of town in between the airport and UBC, or simply stay in an airport hotel. They are closer to UBC, with less traffic, than the downtown hotels are. The West Broadway hotels would be closer to UBC, and would have far more in the way of shops and restaurants.
The public transit in Vancouver is better than it used to be, but it used to be pretty bad. Skytrain(Rapid transit) links the airport and downtown(among other places), but I don’t think UBC is reachable by rail. You have to bus it.
Enjoy, but don’t bet on the weather at this time of year. You can have endless grey skies and drizzle, or sunshine and blooming Cherry trees. It is a beautiful city, and the campus is on an absolutely gorgeous piece of land. You will be looking across beaches and Burrard inlet at snow covered mountains. Wildlife will be abundant. There is very good eating, especially the asian food, which rivals Toronto and NYC.
