I have been offered two food fin aid packages from the University of British Columbia and Reed college and I'm having some trouble deciding. I am an international student from the Caribbean and I intend to study political science. I like Reed's liberal arts approach to study and the rigor of the academic program. I also like the small atmosphere of Reed as opposed to the larger population of UBC. On the other hand UBC has a really good reputation in Canada and internationally; and it would prove to be, personally, more convenient because of family. It would also be slightly less expensive in the long run. I also really like the city of Vancouver and the resources and opportunities that a large University such as UBC would provide.

I really want to get into a good US law school after I finish my undergrad and so I want to go to a school that would enhance my resume and adequately prepare me for studies at a school such as Stanford, Yale, Columbia, etc.

Will someone please help me??!!
I need some advice.

I think that if you chose Reed you’ll definitely have NO problem getting into ANY US school. Reed is very well known in U.S. grad schools. Then again, I’m applying there myself so I may be biased…I can’t really say anything about UBC since I don’t know ANYTHING about it. Sorry…

Reed is AWESOME though, and the climate in oregon isn’t as horrible as in Canada. You’re so lucky you got financial aid! I’m also an international student (transfer) applying for financial aid and i KNOW how hard it is to get it. I would give alot to be in your place! Good luck…

Portland and Vancouver actually have similar climates, so that’s not much of a distinction.

However, from a completely unbiased view(even though I’m a Reedie and Reed isn’t a perfect place), there’s no denying, as nicolles said Reed has an unparalleled reputation (shared with the likes of Chicago, Swarthmore, Harvey Mudd etc.) amongst graduate schools across America(and across the world I’d say; Reed has one of the highest number of Rhodes Scholars for a college its size-31). Reed is a so respected because it has a unique curricular approach and its graduates are more or less always prepared to take on advanced postgraduate study. UBC, on the other hand, maybe one of Canada’s best, but it doesn’t compare to the academic prestige of Reed due to sheer size and consequently the many types of students it has cater to. At Reed, almost all the people will be as smart or smarter than you, while at UBC you’ll get a mix. So decide what you want small yet prestigious Liberal Arts College or a large, respected university.

I no nothing about UBC, but you are extremely lucky to be accepted to Reed. It is a very prestigious and very intellectual school. As for your graduate study opportunities, Reed would be a very good choice.

Anyway, I hope you choose UBC since I am an international waitlisted at Reed :)

First, congratz on your admission to Reed. It is tough to get in as an FA intel.
Go to Reed! I agree with Paradox7 (we’re all coming to Reed this fall). It has very good reputation. You’ll get much more attention and care from the faculty and if you decide to go for grad sch, Reed’s degree is very well-respected!
