I want to apply to one of the UC schools. I live in New York. I'm so confused with the whole application process. How many essays do I have to write and what are the essay topics? What is a "personal statement" exactly?
Also, I'm taking the SAT's this October, so do you think I'll have my scores back by the time the application is due? No one in my family has ever applied to college so I'm so confused about the whole college application process:(

Check out [University of California - Personal statement](http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/how-to-apply/personal-statement/index.html), where you can get detailed information on the personal statement, examples, etc.

You should have a good idea which UC you want to apply to, and I would suggest applying to several.

Since you are coming from out of state, tuition is going to be quite high, and financial aid is limited for those coming from out of state.

What makes you want to apply to a UC, rather than colleges in your own state?

Thank you so much for the link! But are the 2 essay prompts for this year or last years application? And my mom plans on moving there in a year, so she gave me the idea of applying there.

Understand that your mom’s moving there in a year is not going to get you in state tuition for the first year.

Those should be the essays for this year and I do not think they have changed in years.

You can apply to multiple UCs with one application but you cannot actually send the application until Nov 1. You need to send your test scores to only one UC and all UCs that you apply to will get them. The UCs accept through the Dec SAT test for admission (application deadline is not test date deadline).
