UC Berkeley 2014-15 Fall/Spring Transfer Profile

Those majors have similar acceptance rates. I would apply for whichever you would rather study, and could see yourself doing as a career. After all, you’re going to have to write an essay about your interest in whichever major you choose. The one you could write a better essay about is probably the one you like most.

Thanks man, in my case I’d rather do MediaStudies at Berkeley, but for UCLA I’m applying for Sociology because my stats aren’t really competitive enough for Comm.Studies. I’ve spoken to a few on here about initially applying as Sociology and then switching into Media upon acceptance since the pre-reqs kind of coincide, but idk this decision will weigh on me until October probably.

@JustinUC why would you think it would be easier to get into Berkeley’s media studies vs UCLA’s Comm Studies? I’m really curious as to your feedback. I know they’re impacted, but my daughter got into CS at UCLA and I was 100% sure she would NOT get into Berkeley’s. Berkeley is just a harder nut to crack, I think. Also her essay was definitely PR oriented and Berkeley emphasizes the research angle. She did get in, but I was extremely shocked, I can tell you that. I still feel MS at Berkeley would be the harder of the two - although UCLA’s CS has now added a portfolio item and questionnaire.

@lindyk8 Specifics for UCLA are extremely daunting with an avg gpa of 3.92, I can’t find any official averages or given stats for Media Studies so I can only assume its not above a 3.9+. Aside from the numbers, I’ve search termed the two majors in the decisions threads for 2013 & 2014 and some students got accepted for Media and rejected for Communication, but not vice-versa. Both majors are only getting more competitive; the aforementioned are the two main reasons for me really.

I believe I have a decent chance for Media Studies but an extremely unlikely chance with Communications; I’m decided on Sociology for UCLA and leaning towards it for Berkeley.

Ah, ok, thx.
