*****UC Berkeley 2021 Applicants Thread*****

@KevinHuu it should be instant once your teachers submit it from their end. It sent me an email immediately when my teacher submitted it and now it shows a green check mark on the front page.

Hey guys! CA applicant here. 34 ACT, 4.0 UW 4.33 capped 4.79 uncapped. No LoR request.

Has anyone chanced themselves using Roger Hub?

@almostthere2021 Roger hub is possibly the worst chancing tool. Just wait till March

Hey guys! Just wondering if anyone applied to MET, and if so, have any of you received a request for an interview yet?

I remember after I submitted my MET supplement essay, it said that some applicants may receive a request for an interview.

Got a LoR request January 2nd, 2017…

EECS Major
ACT 35
4.0UW, 4.65 uncapped.
800M2, 800 Chem, 800 Physics, 780 USH

@fedfan1998 are you out of state?

Answering some questions here about how the LORs were sent last year. This video is very informative:
https://youtu.be/M-4pi-zlk8g

For me personally - Submitted the application on 11/29 night, Got a LOR request (for 2 letters) on 12/19 with a deadline of 1/15.
So far the GC has sent, still waiting on the second professor to send his letter.

They separate out all applications into 3 categories: YES, MAYBE, NO.
Then send the LOR requests to the MAYBEs because YES and NO are already decided.

Their way of determining MAYBE is one of two ways:

  1. They read the application and determine that the applicant is a MAYBE.
  2. They put the applicant’s numbers through an algorithm and it spits out YES, NO or MAYBE.

Given the volume of applications, it is most like the #2 method that was used on mine.

According to their study, the applicants on the higher side of the MAYBE actually hurt their chances by sending in the LOR, whereas the applicants on the lower side of the MAYBE improved their chances.
I am certainly on the lower side

@cricketfan where did you find this out? Is this just anecdotal? I didn’t get a request to submit a LoR. CA applicant with high GPA and test scores. Does that mean that I’ve already been admitted or denied?

@ap012199 sounds like pure speculation to me, I’d take it with a grain of salt

@Fishnlines29 Doesn’t look like speculation to me. This is a study funded by Berkeley and presented by Berkeley.

My D just this week received LOR request so it’s possible the requests are still being sent. @ap012199 Based on the video link (post #88) you are either a Yes or a No or you are a Maybe who hasn’t been sent your LOR request yet.

See my previous message with the link. Here it is again: https://youtu.be/M-4pi-zlk8g
It talks about what they did for the Fall 2016 applications. My guess is that it is how they did it this year also.

@ap012199 Yes I am

Is it true that Berkeley weighs the English and math section of the ACT more than the reading and science sections?

So based on the youtube video about LOR request and things, if an applicant is considered No on the first read of applications for LOR, is the applicant automatically denied or more likely to be denied?

@BLISHnr I watched the video and although the speaker fails to say whether Berkeley reviews all applicants twice or just reviews the applicants asked for letters twice, my guess is that most of their initial reading decisions for yes/no applicants remain the same.

I strongly disagree about the fact they they see the application read and then decide whom to ask for lor. My application was sent on 22nd nov night as per indian time and i recevd the lor request as soon as the office might have opend on 23rd in UC. I am sure they r not sitting thr to read the application of international candiates immediately after rcpt. They must nt hav seen the test scores also as mine is 2290 and sat subject full in all and AP full in 5 AP exams.
