UC Berkeley 2023 Applicants Thread

My daughter got the same email

@TheMemeMachine Just withdraw if you think its not worth it. Otherwise, withdraw and write to them that it was great applying and stuff, but you got in another school that you have chosen, with great decision making, to attend. I mean youā€™ll have to tell them the truth, however sweet or not. SO if you think any form of that wont work, then just withdraw. Otherwise well, you wait till the results come and see where else you got in? I mean it really wouldnt matter to you, but yeah.

Hope this helps!

@ProfessorPlum168 I donā€™t think its a phishing email since there are no links contained in it. The name at the bottom of email is Olufemi Ogundele. The email was sent from calberkeleyoa@gmail.com

Thereā€™s not any particular hurry to commit to Berkeley before May 1, though my kid did do just that about 48 hours after getting the acceptance.

Housing contracts have only one priority for new enrollees - submit before May 1. Some other schools assign housing based on submitted/commit date, but not Berkeley.

@Workingdadto3 Femi is the new assistant Vice Chancellor, but that makes no sense that he would be sending an email from a gmail account when he would/should be sending from his Berkeley.edu account. I doubt if any official correspondence would come from a gmail account, though berkeley.edu email does use gmail servers. Let me find out some more.

@Workingdadto3

2 points worth noting regarding your matter:

  1. She is the Assistant Dean of Admission for Diversity outreach for STANFORD UNIVERSITY.
  2. Generally/Mostly speaking Universities use a @(university name/university abbreviation).edu such as @berkeley.edu in this case for any sort of contact to applicants and/or to others in context of professional use.

Make what you will of these 2 points.

@Workingdadto3

ā€œI donā€™t think its a phishing email since there are no links contained in itā€.

Another point is the fact that almost all phishing contacts (so to say) wont use links as links are deemed a source of credibility, which is hard to replicate in case of swaying the contacted person (especially in cases of serious matters, such as regarding University applications).

If links may be present, then they are easily differentiable as ā€˜spam-esqueā€™ ones. Otherwise they could even be generic links regarding UC Berkeley (which doesnt help convey any matter).

I dont know much regarding this ā€˜tacticā€™, but Iā€™m pretty confident on the 2 points I made before this one.

Hope this helps.

I agree with @ProfessorPlum168 as he makes points complimenting mine.

@TheGuy1 For point #1, Femi did leave Stanford and start work @UCB last month. But you and @ProfessorPlum168 have confirmed my suspicions about the gmail address. I now think the email must be fake. Whatā€™s weird is that it came around the same time when people started getting their acceptance emails.

@Workingdadto3 Okay! Fair point. I just did a simple google search on ā€˜Olufemi Ogundeleā€™ which showed she still works for Stanford (apparently, but maybe my point was wrong).

The 2nd point was something that really pulls a red flag. But im glad that i could be of assistance in your decision.

Guys please if you got in post your stats. I didnā€™t get in and Berkeley is my number one choice and I would really appreciate reading more about your application, as I am sure would many other people

@compSciLover What do you mean by not getting in? Did your status update not come yet, or did you get your status updated and got rejected?

@TheGuy1 no rejections have came out yet
Either acceptance or no decision as of now

@garamxmasala Oh! Thanks for the clarification. So @compSciLover probably hasnt heard back yet about anything

Iā€™m pretty sure what @compSciLover meant was that for those people who didnā€™t make Regents to also post their stats (in addition to those who did make it).

Is it not good to apply as Undeceided major? Does admission office view it as less appealing candidate?

@TheGuy1 I donā€™t know if I got in yet or not, but I just wanted to read the applications of those who did get in so maybe I could compare them to mine

I got in L&S but didnā€™t get Regents or Chancellors interview invitation. Did I get accidentally accepted? Anyone in the same situation?

@ParkJiSung777 Congrats on your acceptance! Did you get the acceptance letter via email or from the portal? Can you share your letter and stats? And are you In-state or OOS?

@compSciLover Ah. Gotcha!

@ParkJiSung777 That sounds exceedingly rare, but i dont know if UCB mails applicants for status notifications, or just posts them.
