UC Berkeley 2023 Applicants Thread

@Ruthless16 If you don’t mind me asking what were your stats?

@MLG2019 that’s not true. My S2 got into both Berkeley and UCLA, he also has some friends who got into both.

@MrMartador EECS is a totally different animal when it comes to acceptances. I think someone posted some numbers somewhere, but I’ll guess that the average SAT for EECS applicants is around 1550+, UC capped weighted is 4.3 and and uncapped weighted is 4.7. Acceptance rate is pretty close to only 5%.

@ProfessorPlum168 I just got rejected from UCLA. I applied computer science (engineering). I got accepted into UCSB, UCSD, UCI and UCD for computer science in engineering. For Berkeley, I applied L&S CS. Now I’m pretty nervous about Berkeley. Is it still possible for me to get in Cal? Thanks!

If it makes anyone feel better I got waitlisted by UCLA, UCSD, UCD, and UCSB. I didn’t even know it was possible to get waitlisted by that many colleges. Hoping that UCB accepts me cause if I get another waitlist I might seriously lose it.

Did any of you guys on here apply to Berkeley for Integrative Biology? I am kind of scared that they will reject me because it is a pretty impacted major i’m guessing.

@mayobanana UCB CS for L&S will be in theory a bit easier to get in than UCLA CS, since UCLA CS is offered only in Engineering. You’re looking at 15% for UCB L&S versus 8% for UCLA CS. The drawback is that you go in as undeclared and you will need to get a 3.30+ GPA on the 3 CS classes CS 61A/61B/70. Sounds easy enough, but it isn’t. The first and third classes are total weeders. On the other hand, there is a school of thought that says that if you can’t get a 3.3, you probably won’t be very successful at any other high ranking CS program either.

I didn’t see your stats, but whether you get in or not, the other 4 UC programs that you got into are all top notched for CS.

@ProfessorPlum168 do you know if UCB first accepts you and then the major or if the major you chooses affects your chances of getting in. Hopefully my question makes sense since I don’t know if the major I chose (Integrative Biology) will result in a rejection.

@collegebound2023 for Berkeley L&S you are applying to the school, not the major. Theoretically the major that you choose for L&S doesn’t factor in the admissions equation.

@ProfessorPlum168
Wow. Those are some crazy averages. My chances are extremely low.

@ProfessorPlum168 oh makes sense thank you! It was kind weird to me that UCB didn’t let you pick an alternate major when all of the colleges did.

@MrMartador UCLA CS average numbers are pretty similar actually, so you did good to get a waitlist.

Hey @ProfessorPlum168 sorry for bombarding you with questions. Please don’t hate me. But I am honestly just super nervous lol. I don’t know if you have already said anything about this but do you by any chance know if having 4 addresses is a positive sign or it’s just a random thing that shouldn’t be taken seriously?

@collegebound2023 personally I never checked my kid’s portal before the admissions date, so I don’t have my own data point on which to comment on. Knowing what I know about systems in general, I suppose the glitch could mean something, but if so many people have talked about this, you would think that if was really an indication, the university would have fixed this by now.

@collegbound2023:
UCB:
Division (L&S, CNR, CoC, CED, CoE) matters for admission selectivity.
Within CoE (but not the other divisions), major matters for admission selectivity. Changing majors within the CoE after enrolling is not guaranteed, unless one is CoE undeclared.

    Note that L&S admits students as undeclared; admission to capped majors (e.g. CS, economics, psychology, ORMS, statistics, art practice, and a few others) is by college GPA in prerequisite courses (and portfolio for art practice) after attending for a few semesters.

    The business major is in a separate division and admits students in a competitive holistic process. Frosh intending business majors begin in another division (usually L&S), take the business major prerequisites, and apply (usually in their second years). They also need to take prerequisites for a backup major in case they are not admitted to the business major.

All students who apply to UC Berkeley and select a major within the College of Natural Resources are evaluated based on their application, not on the particular major they select.

Alternate majors not considered.

So for impacted majors, the major does matter for admissions purposes according to the document above. But that does provoke a thought, and that is, aren’t your chances better at getting in then, if you put down Slovakian Studies (if that major exists) as opposed to putting down say CS, an impacted major? Since you go in as undeclared in either case. I know for sure that freshmen aren’t bound to any classes based on a major.

@ProfessorPlum168: Good question and I have also wondered if you go for a less popular major in L&S but then decide to pursue CS or Econ would that give you an admission advantage? Does UCB take into account how many applicants will actually pursue their original intended major submitted on their application? I know students change their minds so I guess the reason for the “weed out” classes in the impacted majors?

@Gumbymom @ProfessorPlum168 I was also wondering the same things. Like I could have easily put another major from the L&S that not many people to so that I can get into the college. Then since I anyway go in as undeclared in L&S I could have easily switched. I am just hoping that by putting Integrative Biology as my major I am not making it too compretitve for myself to get into UCB.

@collegebound2023 IB isn’t an impacted major so in your case you would be subject to any restrictions.

@Gumbymom @ProfessorPlum168 The challenge may lay in the fact that the EC’s and Personal Insight questions would have to support the major.
