Essays

Mostly great, but the best one is about my passion for politics.

@nguyennhuynnh 3.96 is still on the low end of things, probably a high reach, and you would have to really have compelling essays and ECs. The fact that you got into UCSD and CPSLO though with below average GPA could mean that your essays are really good. So I wouldn’t expect an admit, but you never know.

@mayablade

Everything looks awesome.

I just have 1 question. Is the GPA HS or UC or Capped?

One of my UC essays was about a trip to an art museum, and then I talked about how each painting represented an aspect of my personality. Does that sound too flowery for berkeley? My friends liked the essay but I’m concerned it isn’t really down to earth

@ProfessorPlum168 @TheGuy1 @Gumbymom thank you for your guys’ help! fingers crossed that they will consider me.

How important are the essays? Looking back, mine were def not the greatest compared to my other schools. My stats UC GPA etc. are pretty in line w the school but I got waitlisted to Ucla so I’m getting nervous. Does anyone know how important they are compared to other UCs?

@ProfessorPlum168 Hey, hope you’re having a great weekend!
I was wondering if you could chance me?

In-state
Unweighted GPA: 4.0
Weighted GPA: 4.58
Weighted and Capped: 4.19 (My school doesn’t offer honors courses until junior year).
ACT: 32
I intend to get the IB Diploma
Major: Biology
I only applied to UC Davis (accepted ) and Berkeley
ECs:
100 volunteer hours at a hospital
Shadowing a physician
Tennis
President of my school’s key club (volunteer group)
Treasurer of my school’s girl up club (advocation group)
Piano
Tutoring middle schoolers in math and English
My essays were about setting up a book sale to raise money after the hurricanes in Puerto Rico, overcoming internalized homophobia, watching a surgery for the first time and how it opened my eyes to medicine, and advocating for the removal of a rule at my school that banned transgenders from wearing clothes attributed to the sex they identified as.

I hear back from 6 schools on the 28th, so that day is going to be hell. I wish everyone the best of luck!

Thank you!

@Gandalf1414 As long as you’re you in the essay and have not badmouthed UCB, you should be fine.

Thats all that can be controlled, the rest’s worth is to be determined by the adcom reader, in terms of admit potential.

No problem! Glad to have helped @nguyennhuynnh

@rshrawg

Essays matter, though not a lot for UC’s. They matter significantly though.

By ‘not a lot’, I mean in precedence to UC GPA and the numbers on the app for a UC app.

Again, I’ll give my opinion @fleetedsummer

Everything’s solid.

THe weighted and capped is great too, though the stats by school/major differ and idk about that. The rest is great regardless.

@TheGuy1
Thank you, have a wonderful evening!

@fleetedsummer your profile looks really good. Keep in mind though that the average GPA is around 4.25 so you’re in the ball park, but you have a lot of company. The topics sound pretty unique and interesting so that’s good. I would say 40-60 to 50-50 chance. Does your school send a lot to Berkeley?

@TheGuy1 The GPA is HS out of 5. We don’t really do weighted and unweighted here because all courses are intensive.

Thanks @fleetedsummer

Remember, the UC GPA avg’s depends by major IMO, but I also agree with @ProfessorPlum168

THe point is, which UC GPA calculator did you use?

I’m having trouble finding a good one, and also @ProfessorPlum168 Is the 4.25 avg for UCB (for all majors) out of 5? and is it the capped one, the capped and weighted one, or the weighted one?

I was actually rejected by UCLA so I’m really freaking out about UCB. Hope I get through. Good luck to all of you!

@ProfessorPlum168 Thank you for the speedy reply. I go to a small French school, and this year’s class is the largest graduating class in its history (43 students), but I would say they have consistently sent 2 students to Berkeley every year.

Gotcha @mayablade

Calculate your UC GPA, since thats what UC’s look at rather than the HS GPA.

The school doesnt weight or UW, thats fine, but all UC’s convert it to said UC GPA.

I really want to find good calc’s for them though. I’ve found some, which are confusing and of questionable integrity.

@fleetedsummer well that makes things easier to figure out - are you one of the top 2 applying to Berkeley lol? Or maybe all the top students want to go to Ivy’s or McGill and you’ll default to Berkeley. I often find that for in-state applicants, your chief competition is your classmates more than anything.

@TheGuy1 use this for UC GPA calculations:
https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/

This interactive page is good for looking at your HS to see what the historical admit numbers are:

https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/infocenter/admissions-source-school

Thanks @ProfessorPlum168

Any clue how to use it if I had half my HS semester wise and half trimester wise?

Also, the interactive page that you sent, are the listed GPA’s the UC GPA’s? or what?

I can see my HS having an applied GPA, but my HS never reports GPA’s or ranks officially on any school document.
