UC Berkeley 2023 Applicants Thread

@nguyennhuynnh

Your SAT score is on the lower end, but you W GPA is good (depends what your UW GPA is at though)

THe rest is fine.

Also,

I heard and saw many ppl say that you cant declare Haas rn, and only can after enrolled?

I know you wanted someone elses opinion, but here’s mine.

@nguyennhuynnh need some more info, which you need to do some research.

  • Need your UC unweighted, capped weighted and capped unweighted GPAs. Google”Rogerhub UC gpa”
  • need you to research your HS and figure out the general percentage of applicants and admits to Berkeley over the last couple of years. Generally that percentage is pretty consistent from year to year. Google “UC admissions by HS”
  • how good are your essays? Compelling, heartfelt, things like that.
  • do you have anything else like first-gen in college? Anything extraordinary like a grade drop because of circumstances?

On first glance it seems like your SAT and grades are in the low end, but the rigor sounds quite good. Essays and ECs can make up for it a bit.

@TheGuy1 do u wanna take a look at my stats?

W gpa 3.92
Uw gpa 3.5

Mediocre essays and EC, strong commitment in piano
Came to the states five years ago( dunno if that helps)

Tia:)

@theguy1: I do not know why you are posting misinformation.

@TheBeyonder

  1. UC’s do not consider Test scores without the writing/essay portion. You can send them and they will see them, but they are not used in the admission decision.
  2. UC’s do not Superscore the SAT or ACT. They take the highest total score from a single sitting.

@TheGuy1 Thank you! Yeah, I couldn’t declare Haas since it’s a graduate school. However, there was an option “undeclared (intending a major in Business Administration in the Haas School of Business)” under L&S. I recently got rejected from UCLA & BU, so I’m really hoping for a miracle from Cal.

@nguyennhuynnh I also got rejected from the two. Do u mind if I ask u what colleges did u get admitted so far?

@ProfessorPlum168 Kindly tell me what my chances are. Be as brutally honest as you can lol.
UC GPA weighted is 4.50.
UC GPA unweighted is 3.88.
UC GPA weighted and capped is 4.19.
SAT- 1340 (I know quite sad and low)
SAT subject test math 2- 660

of APs- more than 15

Essays-
•Emotional but at the same time talked about how determined I was to give back to the underprivileged by becoming a doctor.

  • I am a first-gen in college in the US.
  • My grade dropped to a B first quarter in AP Calc but i motivated myself and brought it up to a B the second quarter

Extra- Curriculars:
•Teaching dance for free for my neighbors
•Organzing food projects for the homeless
• Volunteering at a non-profit every single sunday
• President of a club in my school
•Part of 3 other clubs
• Intern at the state capitol
• Intern at Sutter Medical

From my school 34 people applied and 9 ppl got in and 8 of those people attended UCB.

Accepted- UCM, UCR, UCSC
Waitlisted- UCSB, UCD, UCSD, UCLA
Rejections- None
Waiting on- UCI & UCB

When do the decisions come out?

@ProfessorPlum168 I referred to the grades on my UC app to input into Rogerhub UC GPA…
Unweighted GPA: 3.48
Weighted GPA: 4.24
Weighted and Capped GPA: 3.76
*I’m not sure if I did this correctly because I earned an A from my dual enrollment course (earned 3 units to complete Area H from GE), so I calculated the A into the GPA and added an extra point for honors courses.

17 people were admitted into Cal in the last 4 years.

Essays:
Prompt #1: Leadership experience in my sport
Prompt #4: talked about coming to America as an English learner and learning how to take advantage of the resources around me
Prompt #8: overcoming a common* medical condition
Prompt #5: immigration, attending to my parents’ needs since I was 7 as a translator/interpreter/and taking care of all household documents

and yes, I am a first generation.

@liaaa
I don’t mind at all!
Accepted: UCSD, UCR, CSULB, CSUF, SDSU, Cal Poly SLO
Rejected: UCLA, BU, USC, GWU
Waiting to hear back from: Cal, NYU

@nguyennhuynnh Ah Gotcha. Tbh, 17 acceptances in the past 4 years doesnt correlate to any personal chances.

Again, u didnt ask for my opinion, but @collegebound2023 has a solid stat list. Your Math 2 score’s just acceptable, and mostly so is your SAT, but the rest is solid.

@mayablade 3/28 3pm PST.

@collegebound2023 I would say your chances are around 50-50. GPA is good and rigor is really good. First-gen does help. That school percentage of 25% is above average so that helps a lot. You SAT is on the low side which probably hurts a bit. I saw some of your PIQ topics and they seem like really good topics.

The UCs are masters at controlling the elements. What elements you ask? THE ELEMENT OF SURPRISE! ᕙ(⇀‸↼‶)ᕗ

@nguyennhuynnh if the 3.76 is correct, you have not much of a chance at getting in. The average UC capped weighted is around 4.25. @Gumbymom can provide the percentage breakdowns, but for a 3.76 it’s probably < 5% chance.

You did get accepted to UCSD though which makes me wonder if you did you GPA calculations correctly…

@ProfessorPlum168 I have been admitted to UCSD, UCR, CSULB, CSUF, SDSU, and Cal Poly SLO.

@nguyennhuynnh: I think your UC Capped weighted GPA calculation is off. Getting into UCSD with a 3.76 puts you at a 7% admit rate on that alone.

2018 Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.40-3.79 capped weighted and not major specific:
UCB: 1%
UCLA: 2%
UCSD: 7%
UCSB: 8%
UCI: 7%
UCD: 14%
UCSC: 33%
UCR: 49%
UCM: 82%

@nguyennhuynnh are you sure you calculated your GPA scores right? Getting into CPSLO and UCSD probably means your UC capped weighted is > 4.00, but you mentioned 3.76.

@Gumbymom May I contact you personally for corrections?

@nguyennhynnh: You cannot PM until you have 15 posts, so I will PM you.

@ProfessorPlum168 Sorry for the inconvenience, @Gumbymom helped me correct my GPAs and here are the new fixed ones. I hope this will increase my chances.

3.65 Unweighted UC GPA
3.96 capped weighted and fully weighted UC GPA.
