UC Berkeley and its infamous class sizes.

Do juniors and seniors still have GSIs/TAs for most of their upper-division, major requirement classes? Or are those more advanced classes smaller, thus eliminating the need for a GSI/TA?

(I'm more interested in how this situation is for humanities and social science departments, as I am an intended philosophy/sociology major.)

yeah you’ll still have GSIs. classes do get relatively smaller though.

You can check [Home Page - Online Schedule Of Classes](http://schedule.berkeley.edu) and look up some upper division courses of interest to see how big they are and whether they have TA-led discussions supplementing the main course.

I assume it depends a lot on the size of your department. Most of the upper divs I’ve taken still have GSI’s, albeit only 1-3 per 100-150 kids or so. Unfortunately, I’ve even had classes where the class size was not reasonable, but there was still no GSI.

I agree it must vary greatly on major because I’m a junior transfer in English and have so far only had classes with 20-40 students. Still have GSIs, but all of my GSIs have been just as amazing as my professors.

for Upper div CS courses, class sizes are still 150+. So easy to melt away in the back and never be seen while on facebook or youtube.
