UC Berkeley Cancels Ann Coulter Speech Over Safety Fears

@csdad2 EVEN if everything you said about her was true it has nothing to do with free speech…sorry. Don’t like her or somebody else than don’t go but understand what speech IS protected in this country.

Please site examples where Berkeley has prohibited far left speakers from speaking - I’ll wait.
Why does the left hate free speech? Lena Dunham is disgusting and molested her sister but she has every right to spew her vile opinion.

@Zinhead, none of the essays written by pro Black Bloc activists you posted refutes anything I said or confirms anything that you said. There were likely a few Berkeley students involved. From what I’ve been able to google, three people were arrested in the riots, none of them Berkeley students.

Another trope those on the right like to pull out – things like this are a violation of free speech. The thing is, it’s often not a free speech issue. We’re talking about things like the use of school facilities, sponsorship by school organizations, getting paid.

Yeah, Coulter is free to speak – in her bathroom.

“Lena Dunham is disgusting” – great reply there.

@Gigem86
Why are you so obsessed with Dunham? big Girls fan? I know she’s pretty titilating :wink: you can probably stream the whole series now…

That someone had nothing interesting to say is is a conclusion best made after they speak, not before.

She was never cancelled, she was postponed until a more suitable venue could be found and a better security plan could be implemented. They made it a priority and did what they said they’d do.

Ms. Coulter has spoken at great length for many, many years. She’s not an enigma or an under-represented voice.

Coulter has declined the May 2 date and will come April 27 as originally planned. This’ll be a nightmare. At this point, she’s gonna drag this out as much as possible for every little bit of media attention.

Wonder where she’ll be speaking.

@csdad2 Incorrect …again. Free speech isn’t limited to bathrooms either. She was invited by a conservative group on campus. UCB was giving her a venue to speak. I don’t see your issue. If you don’t want to go hear the speech don’t go. However don’t try to stop others who want to from doing so. Makes you look weak when you fear free speech imo.

It’s so comforting to have folks like Marvin & Alexandre looking out for people, and deciding who should be able to speak. What an enormous burden lifted from the rest of mankind.

Why don’t we just have these special speakers at a Comedy Central roast. Coulter really did great in that setting, showing off how intellectually fit she is…

@moscott:
“UCB was giving her a venue to speak.”
This very well may make it beyond a free speech issue.

“I don’t see your issue.”
Obviously. Instead you just make up stuff to respond to. (Hint: I didn’t bring up free speech.)

@csdad2 Didn’t have to bring it up…“The problems with Coulter go well beyond being condescending and uncouth; she’s a liar, a homophobe, a racist, an anti-semite, and a bigot (just to start with).” Another words she shouldn’t or isn’t qualified to speak. Again even if everything you say about her is true she still has the right to speak.

^^^So instead of being vague your issue is???

I think if colleges cancel speak because of protest then eventually no one from either side can speak. Either side can protest to retaliate. And any side can resort to violence if it’s the preferred method to protest.
