Okay, need some help. I need to decide between Cal CS and CMU SCS.
Academically, I do not want any EE work. Not afraid of it, but just doesn’t interest me. At Cal, I applied through L&S so will need to take the weed out classes and apply to CS. Has anyone done this? Are there other roadblocks to doing this successfully, like class availability, etc.?
Admitted directly to CMU SCS. I hear CMU is generous with AP credits. As I’ve taken 12 AP’s and scored 5’s, I expect to be able to place out of all math requirements which would allow me to really diversify my curriculum or dive head first. Won’t need to worry about weed out classes and class availability. What is the Cal take on AP credits?
So, looking for input on this route at Cal and if anyone has had problems with this approach?
Then, need help in figuring out the pros and cons of each school. I know both are stellar in the field. However I feel like CMU is intense and all the students are truly focused solely on the work. The small school size in SCS will give me greater access to professors and thereby research opportunities. The shortfall to this is missing out on the typical college experiences of fun, diverse student interests in clubs and majors, etc.
At Cal, I think I would have a great overall college experience but worry about the size and its impact to focused students, access to professors and high level topics in my earlier years, and challenges to classes that may impact my chosen route to CS at Cal.
Any thoughts out there? Thanks!!!
