My prediction:
12:30pm - Decisions released
1:30pm - I rush out of my last class to find that I was rejected by Cal
1:35pm - Sprint to the admissions office to DROP MY BERKELEY REQUIREMENT CLASS
1:40pm - Smile :)

woohoo!!!

Take that, MOM!!! her 1st choice is UCB, mine is UCLA :-P

I plan to stay up all night, go to class tomorrow, go for an 8 mile run, and then go to sleep. By the time I wake up, the decisions will probably already have been released.

Then I can either:
A. Cry
B. Cry (tears of joy).

12:30: read rejection.
12:32:submit SIR at UCLA with a clear conscience
1:00: steak lunch
2:00: head to UCLA to buy the shirt that won’t leave my back for too many days.
3:00: get on with my life… finally.

i get accepted:

12:30: read acceptance letter.
12:35 - foreseeable future: make the best / worst decision of my life.

“You really should pick UCLA, if you go other places in the world it actually carries more prestige than Cal!”

Wow, that’s completely inaccurate. I used to live in Korea, and have been to Japan a couple times. In fact, a lot of them were obsessing on trying to transfer to Berkeley from their countries. They all know Berkeley is more prestigious. Everyone I know from the East Coast knows that Berkeley is more prestigious academically as well. It doesn’t really matter anyway because prestige isn’t worth much until graduate school.

dem bones- it’s actually not completely inaccurate. according to the US news 2009 rankings for the world’s best colleges and universities, UCLA places at 30 while CAL is placed at 36

pskate- i’m in your same situation! CAL is my mom’s #1 but UCLA is mine. i am crossing my fingers to get rejected because i wouldn’t go anyway, and i’d feel horrible if i took some student’s spot who really wanted it

Berkeley is way more consistent in getting programs into top 10 rankings as well.
UCLA just makes up a lot of ground in student to faculty ratio, which isn’t too great at either school.

Why would a university rank different on the world ranking? On your chart Berkeley beat UCLA in the only scores that might be factored in differently in a world ranking than a national ranking. That’s beside the point anyway. I think Berkeley is generally considered more prestigious.

Those rankings are inconsistent if you check different sources… too many people rely on US News… UCLA and UCB are excellent schools and it is difficult to compare them…

“U.S. News & World Report’s World’s Best Colleges and Universities rankings based on the Times Higher Education-QS World University Rankings identified these to be the world’s top universities in 2008.”

this is why the world rankings are different from the national rankings.

i get rejected:
9:30-10:55 English Class
11:10-12:30 jiu jitsu training
12:30: read rejection.
12:32:submit SIR at UCSD with a clear conscience
1:00: eat some chicken
2:00: go to work
3:00: get on with my life… finally.
