I am currently attending a community college in California, and I am planning on submitting an application to UC Berkeley this upcoming fall under Media Studies major. For the personal statement for transfer students, I saw that it asks what my intended major is says to discuss how my interest in the subject developed and describe any experience I have had in the field—such as volunteer work, internships and employment, participation in student organizations and activities—and what I have gained from your involvement. I am not currently a part of any extra curricular activities in my college. I am honestly lost and I sincerely wanted to know what kind of things I should do for my extracurricular activities for media studies major. Does the school have preferences?
I don’t think it necessarily has to involve actual experience via extracurriculars - you can take what you learned from MS or related classes and apply them to the real world.
Why do you want to major in Media Studies?
I applied to UCB as a media studies major for fall 2016! For the personal statement portion, I added that I was interning as a digital marketing analyst. I volunteered at multiple random organizations ( I don’t think it matters as much so long as you are active), member of honor societies, and was part of the student government body (marketing & information director). I would recommend for you to just be active within the social media realm - get yourself out there and gain experience. Join any club and run for the position who is in charge of the group’s social media or find an internship somewhere.
I gained interest in media studies when I realized I wanted to do something fun and creative in the entertainment industry. I talked about how there are so many different ways to communicate in the media industry and how there were creative ideas that I wanted to express and history that I wanted to indulge in.
Anyway, there is definitely more to my paper that I wrote about but I hope you get the gist and this helps you in some way! Good luck!
did you get in!
