I also received some info from a trusted source today about how the waitlist works. Berkeley ranks all the waitlisted students when offering people waitlist spots (if you don’t opt-in you’re removed from this list). When people submit the waitlist opt-in form, applications are re-reviewed along with the form and the ranking might be adjusted based on new info provided. Then after June 1st, they admit people going down that list as space becomes available.
This doesn’t explain why they had to wait until today to reject everybody, but I also highly doubt it was a mistake. They likely over-enrolled their class, offered a few waitlisted people admission, had 1 or 2 tiny waves to fill the few left over spots, and rejected everyone else. There was probably at least a few hundred people waitlisted, and if Berkeley only admitted 5-10 of those people, there’s a high chance none of them check this site.
@ucberkeley2019 Didn’t they tell us that the waitlist is not ranked? It says so in the FAQ that was attached to our waitlist letters. In the letter it says that we are reviewed as a group.
@ucberkeley2019 yes but UCB wasn’t built like 5 years ago. They have been doing admission for more than a decade so if it is the fact that they over-enrolled students, I’m speechless…
@Justabanana@ucberkeley2019 not only over-enrolled but took three weeks to reject everyone. Based on this thread, and everyone in this thread, not a single person anyone knew was taken off waitlist/appeals so the class would have to have been finalized the first and they took this long to get back to us and reject all of us.
Welps this is unfortunate but life goes on let’s make the best of what we have now. Going to berkeley doesn’t automatically open doors for our futures and a college education is just what you make of it. Thanks for all the support and updates. It’s been real. Best of luck to everyone here!!
Best of luck to all of you! Still waiting on UCSB here so if I get off that waitlist (its looking about the same as Berkeley so low chance) I’ll see some of you there in the fall! If not, UC Santa Cruz it is for me! Going through this will all you has made process and rejection more bearable.
@justabanana - I feel the same way. I am sad - the finality of it - I had held out hope…but to have the first communication from the university be rejection after all that waiting…
Sometimes it’s not about what’s right. Even if we all protest or something against Berkeley they’re not magically gonna open up spots for us (I wish they would though). At most we get an apology but it’s still not gonna change anything.
@Tillamookie yeah just what did we do to be treated as a joke like this…
Anyways, please don’t let this make us down guys ! Hopefully we will continue to do our best for the next 2 years because your stats look amazing. Everybody has worked so hard for maybe more than 2 years to get those results so we are all deserved to be treated with respect
Guess I’m with UCI for the next few years then
Thanks you guys for all the support. I don’t think I can be this calm if I suffer these 3 weeks by myself…I’m really appreciated that this thread was created
