On the UC Berkeley application, the scholarships page has a ton of different options you can select to show what situational scholarships you are eligible for. One of these is “Gay/Lesbian Student”. Does anyone know if they are using gay and lesbian as umbrella terms for the whole LGBT+ / Queer community, and therefore other marginalized gender and sexual orientations (Bi, trans, pan, ace, non-binary etc) other than homosexual can apply or if the scholarship is only for gay and lesbian students?
? How would the selection committee know if someone is gay, lesbian, or any of the others…other than what the student says?
I don’t know. I’m not going to lie about my sexuality, and if its for all LGBT students I qualify, but if its just for gay students I don’t, and you can only check a limited number of boxes and I’d hate to waste checks on them if I don’t qualify…
It’s LBGT/etc. They just haven’t updated the application. Do a quick Google to reassure yourself, but Berkeley would be the LAST place in the world to draw that kind of exclusionary line for scholarships that are meant to be inclusive.
Okay thank you! That’s what I was thinking, that Berkeley of all places would include the whole community, I just wanted to make sure.
You can find out what there may be by searching the web:
